First responders rushed to the fire, which officials said had started as early as 4:30 p.m. on the roof of an apartment building in Wooster and near Prince Street, and stayed there until mid-afternoon as they tried to quell the flames.

The fire raged for about an hour before officials appeared to contain the inferno, with residents reporting that smoke pouring from the roof of the burning building had stopped.

The fire caused a series of street closures in the Lower Manhattan borough during the peak of a busy afternoon commute, with all eastbound streets on Spring Street between W Broadway and Broadway being closed just before 5 p.m.

Nonetheless, amid the unrest, citizens flocked to the scene of the inferno, footage shows. Many tried to catch a glimpse of the fire above the fire officers’ barricade to the cordoned off Wooster Street as it raged on.
