EXCLUSIVE: ‘Football is always changing, but we’re excited for the future’ – Former Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey wanted to quit after Wales’ early World Cup elimination… but was inspired, under new management in Ligue 1 Nice to carry on

  • EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW: Aaron Ramsey almost quit football after the World Cup
  • Wales were eliminated in the group stage and colleague Gareth Bale resigned shortly thereafter
  • But Ramsey said he was revived by a change of manager at Ligue 1 Nice

Aaron Ramsey was ready to quit football after the World Cup before a managerial change at his club Nice convinced him to change his mind.

The former Arsenal midfielder was named Wales captain following Gareth Bale’s retirement after Qatar 2022 after both players struggled as Rob Page’s side went out without a win in the group stage.

However, Sportsmail understand that Nice’s decision to replace Lucien Favre with Didier Digard in January has reinvigorated Ramsey and he is now keen to continue at the Ligue 1 club, having signed an initial one-year deal last summer .

Asked if he had given any thought to his future in football, Ramsey said: “It’s been a very difficult time after the World Cup. We did so well to finally get to the final and experience that, but it was a very strange World Cup.

“I think a lot of things went through your mind naturally afterwards, but after a bit of time to digest it all you’re ready to go again.

“I’ve come back at club level, we’ve done really well, I’ve enjoyed my football and I’m playing well. There’s a lot to look forward to.

“Football is always changing. There will now be opportunities for younger players to step up and show what they are capable of. We will miss the retired players, but we look forward to the future.”

Nice have marched up the table since Digard’s appointment and now find themselves on the verge of a European place. They also meet Basel in the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League next month.
