Former NBC host Jenna Wolfe, 49, reveals she has had a hysterotomy

Former NBC host Jenna Wolfe has announced that she underwent a hysterectomy to reduce her risk of developing ovarian cancer after testing positive for BRCA-1

The 49-year-old journalist and personal trainer shared photos of herself in hospital on Instagram on Wednesday as she opened up about her recent diagnosis and surgery and admitted she was “a little scared”.

Wolfe, who shares two daughters with her longtime partner, NBC News correspondent Stephanie Gosk, explained that her hysterotomy was her first of two surgeries.

“You know, for a long time my approach to life has always been, if you stumble, make it part of the dance. And until recently, I’ve managed to stumble/dance/stumble/dance my way through everything… TV stations, personal training, parenting. Then I hit a pretty bumpy track, which I wanted to share with you,” she wrote in the caption.

“About a month ago, I tested positive for the BRCA-1 breast cancer gene (meaning my chances of getting breast and ovarian cancer are very high), leaving me little leeway to “think about my choices.”

According to the American Cancer Society, women with a BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have a high risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer.

Preventative surgeries to reduce risk include a hysterotomy to remove all or part of the uterus and a mastectomy to remove one or both breasts.

“Without a lot of options, I stared at my fears, took a deep breath, and decided on two pretty big surgeries,” Wolfe explained. “My hysterectomy is the first. It’s not fun, it’s not easy, it’s not comfortable at all (I’m afraid of needles), but it’s something I have to do. The second operation, the bigger one, will be in 2 weeks.’

The former Today presenter noted that she’s “liked to share more with anyone going through something similar as she uncovers the questions that are now on her mind.

Wolfe admitted she's

Wolfe admitted she’s “a little scared” to face what lies ahead, but knows she has to scare herself “to learn how to overcome it.”

“Something like that twists a few whirls. will i be alright will i heal Will I ever have the drive I once had?’ She asked. “I mean, a big part of my life revolves around fitness and wellness. I know I make everything look “cute” on social media…but we all know it’s usually anything but cute. Especially with children.

“Half the time I get up at 4:30 a.m., do a quick workout before the kids get up, grab something to eat, race to school, often half dressed, mostly half insane.”

Wolfe and Gosk share two daughters, Harper Estelle, nine, and Quinn Lily, eight.

“I admit I’m a bit scared. (About many things in my life now.) But I also know that sometimes I need to let myself be scared in order to learn how to deal with it. It’s easy to ignore the difficult things and settle for the comfort of safety,” she said.

“But safety has never challenged anyone or frightened anyone, or weighed anyone down or pulled anyone up. Security just sits there, keeping you from moving…growing, thriving.

“These two surgeries are just the last in what…let’s call it two challenging years for me,” she added. “But with everything in life, the only way is through.

“And I’ll go through. I realize that everyone has a story. This is mine. (Well it’s part of me). As I embark on this, I will be thinking of you and yours.’
