Gabby Agbonlahor has criticized Chelsea for playing “boring, boring” football after their win over West Ham.

The former Aston Villa striker said he was disinterested in the way Thomas Tuchel’s side are playing at the moment – and said Blues fans felt the same way, especially after their dismal midweek performance at Southampton.

He noted that the team’s performance against West Ham only improved when Ben Chilwell was brought in as a substitute with 20 minutes left against the Hammers.

The 35-year-old said: “I don’t like watching them play football. It is boring. Today was boring. The first half – boring, boring Chelsea. Chelsea fans agreed during the week. Watching them right now is boring football.

“The five in the back, if you look at them, it doesn’t work. Today they put on Chilwell [Marc] Cucurella. Chilwell flies forward, scores a goal.”

Agbonlahor was also quick to criticize Cucurella’s performance, particularly after the money the Blues spent to sign him from Brighton – saying the money could have been put to better use by buying someone from Saturday’s opponents.

“I don’t have it,” said the former England striker of the 24-year-old defender. “I don’t understand £60m. He’s not good technically, very unpredictable. Stupid fouls.

“Bring that to Declan Rice. Today I thought Chelsea got away with one. And West Ham were unlucky not to get a point.

Generally speaking about Chelsea’s spending this summer, under new ownership led by Todd Boehly, Agbonlahor felt the club needed to prove themselves at the top of the table by the end of the season.

He said: “I’m looking at what they’ve spent. Chelsea spent a record £260m on Premier League this summer. You have to be in the top two for me, the top four isn’t enough. Chelsea must finish in the top two. £260 million.

“And they scrape past, with the help of VAR.”

When Jamie O’Hara stepped in to praise Tuchel, Agbonlahor responded by asking: “The money he’s spent do you think he’s doing well at Chelsea?”

Chelsea travel to Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday for their Champions League start before another London derby against west London rivals Fulham on Saturday.
