Golf legend Gary Player says LIV Golf rebels “have no confidence that they can win” when he asks them, “How can you be a champion when you’re playing on a 54-hole tour with no cut?” …and SLAMS Cam Smith for leaving PGA Tour
- The 9-time major champion says Smith’s advisors gave him ‘the wrong advice’.
- The player, who has 24 PGA Tour wins to his credit, thinks the Tour is still the best
- Smith, who recently joined LIV, is playing his first event outside of Boston this weekend
Gary Player – a Saudi golf ambassador – took aim in a sort of friendly fire at Australian golfer Cameron Smith, who recently joined the LIV tour.
Smith will be teeing off in his first event with the tour at a tournament outside of Boston this weekend.
Player, a nine-time major winner who is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time, spoke in an interview with the BBC criticizing the tour’s legitimacy and questioning Smith’s decision-making.
“I wouldn’t take a billion dollars for my nine majors in both [the PGA and Senior] tours,” Player told the interviewer. “The only man to have won the Grand Slam on both tours. i worked hard I wanted to. I have traveled the world. It was an apprenticeship, I met wonderful people.
“How can you ever be a champion playing a 54-hole tour with no cut? What is this tour? 54 holes, no cut, a team event that nobody understands.
Nine-time Major winner Gary Player tore up the LIV Tour and stars like Cameron Smith joined
“It’s a tour for people who don’t have confidence in their future. They don’t have the confidence that they can be winners. It will never be compared to the regular tour. No chance. They have declared war on the PGA Tour.’
The player then turned his attention to Smith, the No. 2nd ranked player in the world to win this year’s Open Championship.
“I was absolutely shocked when I heard[of]Cameron Smith. Here’s a young man that I really thought was going to be a superstar. What future does he have now? Will he be allowed to play at majors in the future? Will he be able to realize this big dream of becoming a world champion? I do not know.’
“I don’t blame myself [major winner Henrik] Stenson for walking. He had no money so he had to go. But this is a potential superstar. I think his advisers gave him the wrong advice.”

The player added that he doesn’t hold most players responsible for going on the tour.
“Most players can no longer win on the regular tour. The PGA Tour will always be the Major Tour. However, what annoys me is that we fulfilled our dream on the regular tour.
“If you’re going on the LIV tour, don’t make a fuss about it! Everyone makes such a fuss! Let them go! If you want to go, go.
“But the PGA Tour is still the tour around the world. Here you can achieve and fulfill your dreams and become a champion. You won’t stop them from leaving, nor will you have to worry about them leaving.
“Because there are so many wonderful young people who[fill]the vacuum — you still have Tiger Woods, you have Rory McIlroy. You have Jon Rahm. They have dozens of wonderful players on the regular tour. What’s all the fuss about? Let them go.’
The player won three Masters, three British Opens, two PGA Championships and one US Open
