Google sees around £100 billion lost in value after chatbot hiccups

Google’s response to ChatGPT has been criticized after it failed to correctly answer a question in a promotional video shared on Twitter – which instantly wiped £100billion from its worth.

Shares in tech giant Alphabet’s parent company fell as much as nine percent after its new artificial intelligence bot, Bard, showed inaccurate information in the ad.

Alphabet posted a video of Bard via Twitter, describing it as a “curiosity launch pad” to simplify complex issues.

The bot had been asked what to tell a nine-year-old about the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and its discoveries.

In response, Bard said Webb was the first to take pictures of a planet outside of Earth’s solar system. However, astronomers were quick to point out that this was actually done in 2004 by the European Observatory’s Very Large Telescope.

WHAT IS GOOGLE’S NEW AI BOT BARD?

On Monday, Google launched its ChatGPT competitor called Bard.

The bot is designed as an “experimental conversational AI service” that answers users’ requests and participates in conversations.

Google reveals users can ask Bard questions like “plan a friend’s baby shower” or how to explain new discoveries from NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope to a 9-year-old.”

However, demonstration of the latter led to false testimony, with Bard saying Webb was the first to take pictures of a planet outside of Earth’s solar system.

Astronomers were quick to point out that this was indeed done in 2004 by the European Very Large Telescope.

The incorrect answer to the example question overshadowed Google’s launch of Bard, Sending Alphabet’s value plummets to £1 trillion.

Chris Harrison, a fellow at Newcastle University, wrote: “Why didn’t you fact-check this example before sharing it?”

Chatbots are designed to mimic humans in online conversations.

They’re commonly used by customer service teams to automatically answer online queries, but are becoming more sophisticated all the time.

When ChatGPT was released by start-up OpenAI in December, it opened the public’s eyes to just how powerful the technology has really become over the past few years.

It has been used to pass exams, preach a sermon, write software and give relationship advice – just to name a few of its functions.

The tool was trained with a gigantic text sample from the Internet to be able to understand human speech.

Earlier this week, Google unveiled its competitor tool Bard, which similarly answers user queries and engages in conversations.

Some technology experts have questioned whether these technologies are up to date, having been found to present misinformation as fact.

OpenAI has recognized ChatGPT’s tendency to respond with “plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers,” an issue it deems difficult to fix.

Google’s Bard’s JWST slip is another example of developers struggling to fix inaccuracies in their AI products.

A Google spokesman said: “This underscores the importance of a rigorous testing process, something we are launching this week.

“We will combine external feedback with our internal testing to ensure that Bard’s responses meet high standards of quality, certainty and realism in real-world information.”

Investors were disappointed as Alphabet didn’t say how it will compete with Microsoft in this space.

Last month Microsoft announced a “multi-billion dollar investment” in OpenAI, founded by Elon Musk.

This week, the maker of the Windows operating system introduced its new Bing search engine, which includes the revolutionary AI chatbot.

A demo version of the updated website is currently live, with a number of preset search terms available to try out the new feature.

The overhaul is the biggest threat Google has seen to its web search dominance – and shows that the race to launch the first AI-powered search engine that will replace what would normally be thousands of results with a single answer is really on is.

But it’s not all over for Google, as it plans alongside Bard to release its own AI in search results that can synthesize material when there’s no simple answer online.

In an announcement Monday, CEO Sundar Pichai stressed that his company’s AI suite will be “bold and responsible” as Microsoft’s ChatGPT is controversial due to abuse.

In December, OpenAI’s bot came under fire after students used it to cheat on tests and homework.

It has also been accused of being left-leaning after refusing to praise Donald Trump, tell a joke about women or argue for fossil fuels.

The company’s CEO, Sam Altman, said that the technology’s limitations in this area stem from efforts to prevent it from “inventing random facts.”

He told The Telegraph: “We know that ChatGPT has flaws in terms of bias and are working to improve it. We’re working on improving the default settings to be more neutral…this is harder than it sounds and will take some time to get right.’

Half of current jobs will be taken over by AI within 15 years, warns one of China’s top AI experts.

Kai-Fu Lee, author of the best-selling book AI Superpowers: China, Silicon Valley, and the New World Order, told Dailymail.com the world of work is facing a crisis “much like the one faced by farmers during the Industrial Revolution “.

“People aren’t really aware of the impact of AI on their work,” he said.

Lee, who is a VC in China and once ran Google in the region, has over 30 years of AI experience.

He believes it is essential “to warn people of impending displacement and to tell them how to start retraining”.

Luckily, he said all is not lost for humanity.

“AI is powerful and adaptable, but it can’t do everything humans do.”

Lee believes that AI cannot create, design, or execute complex strategic planning or perform complex work that requires precise hand-eye coordination.

He also says it’s bad at dealing with unfamiliar and unstructured spaces.

Crucially, AI cannot interact with humans “just like humans” with empathy, human-human connection and compassion.
