Gunman, 48, shot dead after storming a rural police station and pointing a gun at terrified officers

A 48-year-old man was shot dead by police after pointing a gun at officers at a rural police station.
The gunman approached officers at Tenterfield police station in north NSW at 5:45pm on Thursday.
Officers from the New England Police District shot the man before disarming him.

Despite the efforts of responding police and paramedics, the man died at the scene (pictured a map showing the northern NSW town near the Queensland border).

“A Critical Incident Team of officers from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will now investigate the circumstances of the incident,” NSW Police said in a statement.
It will also deal with police firearm surrender.
The investigation will be subject to an independent review.
