A designer on Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid remake has revealed why he left a “weird” Ariel movie out of the original animated film.
Colleen Atwood is a prolific designer who has helped on hit shows like Netflix’s Wednesday, Into the Woods and Beetlejuice 2, due out next year.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaarshe revealed why they decided against dressing star Halle Bailey in the famous purple shell bra from the original film.
She said they turned away from the cupped bra in the cartoon that came out 34 years ago in 1989.
Coleen said, “I just think we wanted to bring a more fishy quality to the girls.”

“Having them all the shells slapping their boobs seemed like a weird way to go.”
“And once you start sticking shells onto real bodies, it’s difficult to make them look good, believe me.”

Disney had a budget of $250 million for the film, which is more than what was spent on Titanic.
The remake was mainly filmed at Pinewood Studios in Slough and on the island of Sardinia in Italy.
Halle, 23, stars as Ariel in the film and was originally criticized by some people because Halle is black while Ariel was originally white with red hair in the cartoon.
The actress spoke up shine about the black depiction in the film.
During the chat, Halle addressed the emotional videos of young girls seeing a black woman as a Disney princess and how she managed to maintain her own identity while filming the remake.
When asked about the videos, Halle said, “When I saw them for the first time, I just cried.” I sobbed uncontrollably.

“The fact that these babies are looking at me and feeling the emotions that they’re feeling is a really humbling and beautiful thing.”
The live-action received mixed reviews from critics who praised Halle’s performance as Ariel but claimed that the remake “couldn’t escape its animated legacy”.
DiscussingFilm’s Felicia Wade wrote on Twitter: “With “#TheLittleMermaid” it’s almost Disney’s best live action film, but it still has problems with the villains.
“Halle Bailey IS Ariel and I literally had goosebumps throughout her performance.” “This is a little mermaid retelling like you’ve never seen before.”
Erik Davis of Fandango and Rotten Tomatoes agreed, “Disney’s #TheLittleMermaid is definitely one of the better live-action adaptations.”
“Halle Bailey pours out incredible emotion on Ariel, and I get goosebumps watching her while Melissa McCarthy’s Ursula and Daveed Diggs’ Sebastian steal scenes all day.”
But Insider’s Kirsten Acuna wasn’t as impressed, tweeting: “#TheLittleMermaid is packed with some great performances from Halle Bailey and Melissa McCarthy, but it’s mostly a paint-by-numbers remake that’s not as good as the animated masterpiece.” .’
