Three people are feared dead after two helicopters collided in mid-air near Sea World theme park while horrified holidaymakers looked on.

Debris rained down over the Broadwater on the Gold Coast before the crippled plane crashed onto a sandbar around 2 p.m. local time Monday.

Rescue services rushed to the wreckage in hopes of finding survivors, but fears are high for everyone on board – there are believed to be three in all.

Queensland Police and the Queensland Ambulance confirmed that multiple units were dispatched to the “aviation incident” but had no further information.

Matt Fitzpatrick, captain of the Volunteer Marine Rescue Southport Duty, said three units were dispatched to the scene.

“Several helicopters are involved and we do not know the condition of those who were on board,” he said.

Witnesses expressed shock at the mid-air collision – the last thing they expected on the last day of the year-end holidays.

“I just saw two helicopters collide at SeaWorld,” said Dang Nguyen.

Others said it was “beyond horrific” to watch the accident.
