Horror as a man allegedly steals a car with a child sleeping on it near Newcastle in New South Wales

A child in New South Wales who was in the back seat of a vehicle that was reportedly attacked has been safely returned to his family without harm.

A man reportedly took control of a parked vehicle on Groves Road near Newcastle at around 2.30pm on Sunday.

A one-year-old child was sleeping in the back seat of the vehicle. The suspected car thief continued toward Pacific Highway but stopped in a nearby parking lot, abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene.

A quick investigation by police led to the arrest of a 27-year-old man at a residence on Cherry Street in Windale around 3 p.m. Monday.

The suspect was charged with crimes including unlawfully taking or driving a motor vehicle with a person inside, taking and driving a means of transportation without the owner’s consent, and driving as a learner driver without proper accompaniment.

The man was denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Belmont District Court on Tuesday.
