HUGE BBC sitcom to be CANCELED after five series – as cancellation of BAFTA-nominated show leaves fans devastated
A huge BBC series has been scrapped which is sure to leave fans devastated.
The broadcaster confirmed filming on The fifth series of Ghosts finally came to an end on Friday after being nominated for a BAFTA for Best Screenplay.
First airing in 2019, Ghosts follows a cash-strapped young couple who inherit a ramshackle country house, only to find it teeming with needy ghosts.
The team behind the hit show claimed it was time to say goodbye to Button House residents and focus on new projects.
Said: “After five incredible years of haunting the halls of Button House, we’ve decided the time has come to let our beloved sitcom Ghosts rest in peace.
“We have just wrapped up filming our fifth and final series and can’t wait to share it with all of you later this year.

We could never have imagined the reception the show would receive or the fun we had making it and we would like to thank our amazing cast and crew and everyone at BBC Comedy, BBC1 and Monumental Television for their tireless support.
“But most of all we want to say thank you to everyone who is watching. Mathew, Martha, Simon, Jim, Laurence and Ben x.”
Jon Petrie, Director of Comedy at the BBC, said: “We are officially mourning the end of this BBC Comedy Classic. We can’t thank the Ghosts team enough for five incredible series (not to mention some perfect Christmas specials) and we can’t wait for BBC viewers to catch the final series. We look forward to working with the team on new projects.”
Alison Carpenter, Creative Director at Monumental, added, “We’re so proud of Ghosts and especially how dear audiences have been to it.
“We couldn’t be more grateful for the creativity, talent and hard work put in by each and every cast and crew member across the five series, starting with the show’s brilliant creators and stars.
“The Ghosts family is very happy and we will miss them.”
Ghosts starred writers and creators Mathew Baynton, Simon Farnaby, Martha Howe-Douglas, Jim Howick, Laurence Rickard and Ben Willbond, with Lolly Adefope, Charlotte Ritchie and Kiell Smith-Bynoe.
In the upcoming fifth series, Alison (Charlotte Ritchie) and Mike (Kiell Smith-Bynoe) begin exploring other means of making ends meet and contemplate a new chapter that will have a major impact on the (after) lives of the Ghosts could have.
The fourth series premiered in fall 2022 and was nominated for a BAFTA in the Best Scripted Comedy category.
It was the biggest comedy series of the year in terms of viewership on all television, with 5.7 million viewers tuning in to the first episode.
