I peel bananas before I weigh them in the supermarket – it’s a great way to save money

Frugal man peels bananas before weighing them at supermarket to save money – and people are telling his girlfriend to dump him

With food inflation soaring and the cost of living hitting an all-time high, many shoppers are looking for the best ways to save money.

While some are opting for cheaper ingredients when shopping for groceries, others are a little more creative with their savings plans — like a frugal TikToker who wanted to reduce the cost of his weekly grocery shopping.

The shopper from Australia was caught peeling bananas before weighing them at the self-checkout to make them slightly cheaper.

The super saver named Mason was exposed for his hilarious but supposedly effective way of saving money through a video posted to a TikTok account he shared with girlfriend Mai.

In the video, shared on the @savingforboba account, Mason demonstrates his cost-saving technique – but not everyone is convinced of the method and some have accused him of being a “cheap freak”, while others have even encouraged Mai to leave.

TikTok couple Mason and Mai shared Mason’s trick on how he buys cheaper bananas – by peeling them before weighing them at the supermarket

Mai posts the video on TikTok and writes: “How my frugal friend saves money for his bananas.”

She adds in the caption, “The second-hand embarrassment.”

As the video begins, Mason is seen taking a banana from the basket and peeling it in the supermarket.

Then he drops the peeled piece of fruit into a small, transparent carrier bag.

In the next shot, Mason puts the peeled banana in its bag on the scales at the self-checkout machine.

In response to Mason’s idea, viewers of the video were unsure about his savings plan.

One person warned Mai: “Break up with him and call the police.”

Another said, “All to save 25¢.”

While Mai insisted her boyfriend’s move was “frugal,” another person argued, “That’s not frugal, that’s stinginess.”

One viewer joked, “The weight of the plastic bag and the cost involved must be giving him sleepless nights.”

The couple, who often post money-saving tips on their TikTok account, have also shared innovative but slightly controversial ways to snag freebies to save money.

In one video, the couple visits the Taco Bell fast food chain, where Mason decides he wants a fizzy drink but doesn’t feel like paying for it.

The chain offers free refills for people who have already paid for a fizzy drink.

To save himself paying for the drink, Mason picks up a used mug off the street in the parking lot before taking it to the refill station.

Viewers were even less impressed by the “hack” than by the cheap bananas, and used the comments to criticize Mason.

One person said, ‘That’s a huge warning sign. Time for a new friend.’

Another said: “THIS IS FERAL. I hope he didn’t drink from it.”
