Ian Poveda finally shines for the sunny Seasiders as his goal and assist help Blackpool win

Ian Poveda finally shines for the sunny Seasiders after his goal and assist put Blackpool into an FA Cup fourth round match against Southampton after beating another Premier League club, Nottingham Forest, at Bloomfield Road

  • Ian Poveda scored one goal and another in Saturday’s FA Cup win at Blackpool
  • They beat Nottingham Forest to secure a draw with another Premier League team
  • Poveda is on loan from Leeds United and has proved important for the Seasiders
  • Forest chief Steve Cooper said he will make 11 more changes despite the loss

Blackpool are relegated to the Championship but that stunning FA Cup win was dusted with a sprinkling of Premier League stardust, a fine example of how the loan system works at its best.

Midfielder Charlie Patino, 19, avenged his loss to Forest in the same competition as Arsenal a year ago, while Manchester City winger Morgan Rogers, 20, impressed on his debut as a second-half substitute. Most notably, Ian Poveda, on loan from Leeds United, scored and assisted another in a man-of-the-match performance that top-flight Forest could not cope with.

Poveda is 22 and is finally starting to fulfill the potential first seen at City academy and more recently Leeds. He was a major force behind the Seasiders, who took advantage of a weakened Forest line-up to record their first win in 10 and reach the fourth round 70 years after lifting that most famous trophy.

“It was definitely one of his best performances for us and the goal probably nudges it as the very best,” said Blackpool manager Michael Appleton of his exciting No. 10. “The penny has dropped a bit since the break. His work rate is unbelievable for a boy in his position.

“He still has a lot to learn. There’s nothing I can teach him about his ability to walk past people. That’s just natural. What I can do is help him from possession to get into good areas to help his teammates and hurt the opponent. He’s a Premier League player, he just has to believe it. In terms of his passing, crossing and shooting, that’s sheer skill. He’s starting to understand that the game isn’t just about having the ball at his feet.”

Forest head coach Steve Cooper made 11 changes, with the tie sitting between a Premier League win at Southampton last Wednesday and a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Wolves this Wednesday. Still, their side consisted of £25m striker Emmanuel Dennis, Wales’ Wayne Hennessey and Neco Williams, plus Brazil international Gustavo Scarpa, making his first start.

Despite Marvin Ekpiteta scoring early, Forest had chances to equalize before a late collapse prompted most of their 3,500 traveling fans to leave early. Poveda scored the decisive goal midway through the second half after a mistake by Williams. CJ Hamilton added a third and Jerry Yates a fourth from Poveda’s cross before Ryan Yates scored an added-time consolation for Forest.

Cooper has hardly made a mistake at Forest but has wondered if he picked the right team here. His quick conclusion: Yes. “I don’t think I would do anything differently,” he said. “We picked up injuries, traveled to Southampton and the group was really tired. We cannot afford to take risks.

“I thought about my selection after the game but if our players out there were anywhere near their level it would have been comfortable for us.”

Appleton, who will get his own trip to Southampton in round four, agreed with Cooper’s stance: “Why wouldn’t you make changes if you were in the luxury position that Steve has,” he said. “There is quality throughout the club.”

It was only Forest’s second loss in eight, but Cooper blasted the ad as “unacceptable.” “It should be a reminder of what not to do. I’m glad we have a midweek game, we need to be back quickly.

Appleton must hope this provides a boost for the league where recent results have put him under pressure. Lightning didn’t strike twice for Patino after being dumped on Mikel Arteta’s Gunners team at the City Ground last season. “Thank God that was happier,” Appleton joked.
