A doctor has revealed the surprising reason why you should never mix berries with milk or yogurt in your smoothies.
Dr. Charles Puza, a dermatologist practicing in New York City, has more than 1.4 million followers on TikTok, where he shares science-backed health and beauty tips.
He recently I put together a video by content creator Dana Bobyn, who makes a high-protein smoothie with banana, blueberries, almond butter, Greek yogurt, protein powder and spinach.
Dr. Puza noted that he loves smoothies before pointing out the one ingredient she should have left out if she wanted to reap the full health benefits of the berries.

Dr. Puza pointed out the one ingredient she should have left out if she wanted to reap the full health benefits of the berries
“No offense to this creator because I feel like no one really teaches that,” he said.
“But when you mix dairy with antioxidant-rich foods like blueberries—the stuff you want to spice up your smoothies with—you’re actually cutting off the absorption of the antioxidants.”
“That’s true,” he added, saying he would share the study in the comments.
The study Dr. Puza found that consuming blueberries with milk reduced the absorption of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant.
Antioxidants are chemicals that neutralize the activity of harmful free radicals, which are linked to diseases such as heart disease and cancer.
Berries, vegetables, beans, and teas are known to be rich in antioxidants, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you should avoid consuming these products with dairy.
Although research has shown that milk reduces antioxidant capacity to some extent, there is not enough evidence to suggest that consuming dairy products along with high-antioxidant foods and drinks compromises health benefits HealthyLine.

Others shared that they didn’t find the study convincing enough to stop mixing dairy with berries.
