Just two weeks ago, respected water cop Sandi Mellon was living a perfect life.

She drank beers by the pool in Bali with her best friend by her side while her husband Neil, a senior police officer, raked in a handsome salary back home in Darwin.

But it all came crashing down last Friday when the mum learned the family home she shared with Neil had been searched by her fellow NT Police officers.

Mr Mellon, an acting senior sergeant with the force, was handcuffed on Thursday shortly after he showed up for work at Darwin Police Station.

He was later charged with 31 felonies, including attempting to pervert legal process, theft, unlawful access to data and alleged destruction of evidence in connection with an investigation into a major accident. These charges are believed to be linked to the helicopter crash that claimed the life of Outback Wrangler TV star Chris “Willow” Wilson earlier this year.

It is understood police will claim Mr Mellon flew to the scene after the crash and collected Mr Wilson’s body off-duty and before other emergency services arrived, The Australian reported.

On the same day that Mrs Mellon grappled with her decorated cop husband being charged with a range of offences, she revealed another blow to her personal life.

Ms Mellon had fallen out with her best friend – with whom she had recently holidayed – and expressed her pain at the sudden end of their relationship.

On the same day that Mr Mellon was charged, his wife posted a photo of her and her best friend in matching t-shirts to Facebook with a scathing message. The friend had been to Bali with the group

“Look at this woman here, she’s my best friend – we’ve done everything together, we’ve been on a lot of holiday and camping trips as a family,” Ms Mellon wrote in a since-deleted Facebook post.

‘Said we were sisters, family. Bandaged at the hip for three years – before he criticized the mate. Daily Mail Australia has chosen not to publish this scathing post, which is no longer online.

The closeness of this relationship prior to the falling out has been evident in numerous social media posts, with the couple most recently enjoying a trip to Bali with a group of friends. The couple were even picked up together from the island’s airport.

Photos from the holiday showed the mum and friends soaking up the sun in a pool while visiting families in nearby villages to drop off items like groceries and toiletries.

The group were also spotted dining, enjoying some of Bali’s famous Bintang beers.

Before their Bali trip, the two women regularly appeared together on social media, including at social events.

Daily Mail Australia reached out to the former friends for comment.

Meanwhile, Ms Mellon’s husband was suspended from his position without pay while he and his family were supported.

It is understood that Mr Mellon was friends with Mr Wilson, one of the stars of the National Geographic television show Outback Wrangler.

Mr Wilson was hooked 30m from a helicopter collecting crocodile eggs in West Arnhem Land on February 28 when the plane crashed.

The 34-year-old father of two was killed in the accident. The pilot, Sebastian Robinson, 28, suffered serious injuries in the crash but survived.

Outback Wrangler is a hit adventure television series filmed in remote top-end locations and broadcast in more than 90 countries.

Mr Wilson was one of three cast members alongside presenter and presenter Matt Wright and Jono Brown.

Mr Wilson had been dangling from a sling under the Robinson R44 helicopter to collect the eggs from hard-to-reach crocodile nests in swampy areas before the tragedy struck.

The father-of-two’s body was found 40 meters from the main wreckage at the King River crash site, according to a preliminary Air Transport Safety Bureau report released in April.

The crashed helicopter and its crew were one of three eggs that day. It was found by one of the other crew after failing to respond to radio calls.

NT Police Deputy Commissioner Michael White said some of Mr Mellon’s charges relate to a major accident investigation that began in February this year.

He said police will claim Mr Mellon’s actions undermined “the integrity” of NT police and the community.

“It is important to recognize that this officer’s conduct will be brought to justice and the matter is related to the damage and distrust of his position within the police force,” he told reporters on Friday.

Mr. Mellon joined the state police force in 1995 and was the former officer in charge of the Territory Response Group (TRG) where he is one of the longest serving members with 15 years of service

The 47-year-old joined the state police force in 1995 and was the former officer in charge of the Territory Response Group (TRG), where he is one of the longest-serving members, with 18 years of service.

He was even called upon to protect the Dalai Lama and Barack Obama when they visited Australia.

Mr Mellon worked as a Darwin Watch Commander and also worked at Alice Springs and the Police Training College.

He was presented with an Australian Police Medal as part of the Australia Day Honors in 2019.

Former Police Commissioner Reece Kershaw said he was involved in various tactical operations at the time, including body finds and shootings.

“He has encountered onerous, stressful and dangerous situations throughout his career, but acts boldly and goes above and beyond what is expected of members of the force,” Kershaw said.

He was also recognized in 2016 for “outstanding professionalism, bravery and exceptional operational assistance” for his work in rescuing a tourist who fell from Uluru.

Mr Mellon has been released on bail and is due to appear in court on September 22.
