Introducing the wands that made the YOU team flutter

Most women when asked what their beauty choice would be on a desert island, go for mascara. The instinct to go for this beauty staple is understandable given the huge difference it can make to our looks. Whether you prefer subtle definition or full-throttle flutter, a touch of mascara frames the face and is one of the easiest ways to instantly look your best.

My favorite mascara (and I’ve tried a lot) is without a doubt Benefit Roller Lash (£24.50, benefitcosmetics.com). The curved wand has one side that charges lashes while curling them at the same time, and the other side combs through to create a flawless finish, adding oomph to the length. It hardly clumps and doesn’t smear. “What mascara do you wear?” is the question I get asked the most, and the compliments I’ve received have made Roller Lash the number one purchase in my beauty arsenal.

However, in my quest for the best mascaras the beauty aisles have to offer, some of these alternatives have twisted me — so much so that a few have stayed in my makeup bag. And since it’s also become increasingly apparent how subjective choosing a mascara can be, the YOU team tested each of these (opposite to each other) to make sure we all agreed.

The curved wand promises curled lashes without the need for an eyelash curler and lifts lashes into place. The results are impressive. The brush bristles are densely packed to ensure minimal clumping and the formula wears (literally) without drips and dries quickly.

This uber cool brand is famous for their fake lashes, so I had high hopes for their latest mascara offering. From the name I was expecting this to give feathery lashes, but boy does it deliver heavy volume. The flexible rubber brush penetrates the base of the lashes well and sweeps out all clumps.

The bubble shape might look a bit unusual but adds a good length and separates the lashes very well. Also, the clever formula contains Biotin (to stimulate eyelash growth) and Melitan – a peptide that increases eyelash pigmentation to gradually color them with regular use.

This water-activated solid mascara has three rods (for separating, defining and thickening), comes in a recycled cardboard box and is both vegan and cruelty-free. You wet the brush and then swirl it in the mascara “tube.” I’m impressed by its highly pigmented colour, its mega durability and its ecological claim. And you can bypass liquid restrictions on flights. Result!

Using a bristle brush that combs lashes well will define and lengthen them without looking too “done”. Best for those who prefer fluttering to full fur. If you prefer more volume, a second coat works wonders without becoming fluffy or brittle.

When it was launched in February, this mascara sold out in seven minutes. The Irish makeup artist behind it knows exactly what works, as the wand is curved, with large combs on three sides to ensure there are no lumps. Plus, the formula adds serious length that will endure sweaty workouts and tearful movies alike without slipping anywhere it shouldn’t.

One of our testers described this as “love at first movie”. The comb-like teeth on the wand separate lashes well for a luscious and long-lasting finish that survives meltingly hot weather. This is one for those who prefer definition over dramatic eyes.

THE HIGHLY EFFECTIVE

Another Maybelline mascara made our top picks, and with good reason. Blacker than black, this formula is powerful stuff — it lengthens, lifts, and adds volume. Using a flexible brush to reach those tiny lashes in the corners will pack a punch, even for stubby lashes. Several of our guinea pigs received compliments while wearing it. Plus, it has staying power without crumbling.
