Is Fire Emblem Engage a sequel to Three Houses?

Fire Emblem Engage, the latest game in the Fire Emblem series, lets the player follow Alear, the newest protagonist, and many other entities on their journey to restore world peace.
The game’s newest mechanic, the Emblem feature, lets Alear and other characters equip rings that “sync” them with heroes from Fire Emblem’s past. These emblems allow them to boast new abilities and weapons, and even merge with the characters within the emblems.
1,000 years ago, the fallen dragon launched his attack on Elyos from Gradlon, a land now doomed. The Divine Dragon used the power of the Emblem Rings to plunge Gradlon to the bottom of the sea surrounding Lythos where it is today. #firesign pic.twitter.com/HTJCsLaIWN

As mentioned earlier, in Fire Emblem Engage, previous heroes will be available in the emblems that the main characters will have to use in battle. One of those heroes is Byleth, the protagonist of Fire Emblem Three Houses. According to Nintendo’s website, the “Emblem of the Academy” can use many different weapons and tactics to aid in battle.
Byleth’s presence in the game implies that Engage takes place after the events of Three Houses, but it doesn’t appear to be a direct sequel. The story of Fire Emblem Engage appears to be completely unique and will see a new cast of characters fighting to save the continent of Elyos from destruction.
Engage will include several new features while retaining some that were present in its Switch predecessor, Three Houses. With a host of new combat aspects, both long-time fans and new players will find interest in the game.
Fire Emblem Engage will be available for purchase on January 20th, with multiple waves of downloadable content following its release later this year.
