As Mr Newton took out his phone to film the statue atop the World War I and II memorial, he spotted what appeared to be a “foggy figure” of a man sitting on a bench.

The engineer, from Staines-upon-Thames, Surrey, admitted he was a skeptic of the paranormal but said seeing the ghostly figure “changed his perspective” when it comes to ghosts and made him a believer has.

The Northam War Memorial inscription bears the names of soldiers who fell between 1914 and 1919 and between 1939 and 1945.

“It looked like a really foggy figure,” said Mr. Newton. ‘It was clear. It was like someone [was] literally sitting there.

“It was definitely a male character, so it could very well have been a soldier’s ghost.

“As I adjusted my eyes to look a little closer, it went away. It was to my left and then completely gone. It was weird. As we turned the corner it just disappeared.

“I feel 100% like it was a ghost. It was clear as day to the naked eye.”

Mr Newton added: “I was shocked. I looked and didn’t know what I saw. And then I looked at the video and I was like, no, there was something and now it’s just gone.

“I didn’t believe in the paranormal, but now I do. It changed my perspective. It converted me.’

Immediately after the sighting, the two friends turned the car around to investigate.

However, when they returned to the spooky scene, the bank was empty and the ghost was gone.

Mr Newton said the video was a hit with other skeptical family and friends, who claimed the footage was “like nothing they had seen before”.

“There was nobody there, it was just me and George. I’m glad I put it on film because no one would have believed me [otherwise],’ he said.

“My family couldn’t believe it. They said it was like nothing they had seen before.

“Some of my family members are skeptics, others believe [in ghosts] and some of them didn’t, but it sort of closed that for them.

“It has converted my skeptical families and friends.”

The supernatural clip shocked users online, garnering almost 300 likes, shares and comments on Facebook.

One user said: “Whoa! This is trippy. Very cool.’

A second said: “Looks like a ghost to me”.
