Is The Mortuary Assistant getting a movie?

After first launching just a few weeks ago on August 2nd, The Mortuary Assistant wasted little time in becoming a hit on PC. So it’s perhaps no surprise that there are rumors that the trending first-person supernatural horror game could soon be reaching new horizons. Here’s a breakdown of whether or not The Mortuary Assistant is getting its own movie.

A live-action feature film adaptation of The Mortuary Assistant is actually in pre-production.

This was announced by the publisher DreadXP and its parent company Epic Pictures Group on Thursday.

The Mortuary Assistant film adaptation is written and directed by Jeremiah Kipp (Slapface, Black Wake, Draw Up & Stare, Broken Bridges, The Sadist).

“The Mortuary Assistant has a calm, unnerving intensity that creeps into the player and makes them feel like something terrible could happen at any moment,” Kipp said in a press release. “When I was writing the adaptation, I wanted to celebrate all of the game that terrified me while also creating a counterpart to it – honoring the dense, spooky world developer Brian Clarke made and breaking it down into the visual storytelling and character-driven.” Translating the Horrors of Narrative Filmmaking.”

Mortuary Assistant creator and DarkStone Digital developer Brian Clarke will also be directing the film.

“It’s such a rare and exciting opportunity to have your work filmed,” Clarke said in a press release. “When I started developing the game two years ago, I certainly never imagined this would happen to me. Movies have always been the main inspiration for the style of my games. I’m always trying to create stories, dialogues and moments that feel cinematic, so the opportunity to bring this project to completion is to make a dream of mine come true.”

Patrick Ewald, CEO of Epic Pictures Group, is also set to produce the film for the game, which DreadXP announced has archived a top 10 spot for streamed games on Twitch, has become a top seller on Steam and has reached over ten million views in YouTube Let’s Plays.

“The incredible response to The Mortuary Assistant has made it one of DreadXP’s most successful games to date,” Ewald said in a press release. “The world Brian Clarke created is rich in lore and the perfect subject to expand on with a live-action feature film. DreadXP’s parent company, Epic Pictures Group, is already in an excellent position to make this happen, having financed, produced and distributed over 100 films over the past 15 years.”

Casting for the film will be announced in the future.

Here is the official synopsis for The Mortuary Assistant:

Mortician Rebecca Owens thinks her first night on the job will be embalming a surplus of corpses, but she soon learns that a sinister presence resides in the River Fields morgue. As the dead awaken and malevolent spirits bind themselves to them, Rebecca must learn how to fight the demons (including the figurative demons of her past) and survive the night.
