Is The New Dead Space a remake or a reboot?

Motive Studio’s groundbreaking series, Dead Space, is about to return. Dead Space (2023) is out January 27 for PC and consoles, but in the world of franchises that are constantly being revived, it can be difficult to keep track of new and returning stories.

The original Dead Space was released in 2008 for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. The game follows Isaac Clarke, an engineer assigned to investigate the disappearance of the USG Ishimura starship, as well as his girlfriend Nicole, an Ishimura crew member. Once on board, Clarke is separated from his team and forced to contend with nightmarish mutant horrors and other dangers, defending himself with improvised weapons like the legendary plasma cutter.

The original Dead Space received critical acclaim and spawned two sequels that also received critical acclaim from critics and gamers alike, which perhaps explains why anticipation for the remake has reached such a high in recent months. Players were recently treated to another pleasant surprise: pre-ordering Dead Space (2023) for PC gives them access to an additional free game.

Dead Space (2023) is a remake, not a reboot. This means the game will return to the game’s original world, story and characters from 2008, covering many of the same events and possibly even remaking it ‘shot by shot’. Fans will likely be happy to return to a game they’re familiar with, while new players can experience the game for the first time with no prior knowledge.

However, the game isn’t a mere remaster either. Along with technical improvements and visual updates, gameplay elements will be overhauled to rebuild the game “from the ground up,” according to the game’s Steam page.
