Fans, players and pundits have hailed Angel Di Maria’s goal for Argentina as one of the best goals in World Cup final history from a scintillating move.
Di Maria added a second for Argentina after Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the spot in the 23rd minute when Di Maria was fouled by Ousmane Dembele.
Kylian Mbappe scored twice in 95 seconds to send the game into extra time and Messi thought he’d won it as he put Argentina 3-2 ahead, but the PSG star struck again from the penalty spot as the Final went to penalties.

Di Maria’s goal came after a great game by the Argentines. Nahuel Molina cleared the ball at the feet of Alexis Mac Allister, who flicked the ball to Messi.
Messi took a touch and played the ball with the outside of his boot into Julian Alvarez, who played a pinpoint through ball to Mac Alllister after the Brighton man continued his run.
Mac Allister then crossed the ball for the first time for Di Maria, who also fired past Huge Lloris with aplomb for the first time in the French net.
Di Maria, overwhelmed by the event, burst into tears after the goal, giving his side a perfect start as France struggled with Argentina’s attacking game.
After the goal was scored, tributes poured in from around the football world for the superb team goal.

Another YouTube star, Chris Dixon, said: “Di Maria with the Ozil bounce finish. Damn Arsène Wenger did it again.”
Dixon’s tweet referred to the rebounded finish once scored by former Arsenal star Mesut Özil, aiming the ball into the ground to bounce it over the keeper.
And Özil himself got involved when he praised Di Maria. He said: “I would say one of the best goals ever in a World Cup final… Nice finish Brooo… #DiMaria #ÖzilBounce.”
The Juventus midfielder, who also scored in Argentina’s Copa America win in 2021, enjoyed an excellent first half and received plenty of praise.

The goal was discussed in the studio at half-time and pundits raved about Argentina’s aggressiveness.
Ian Wright said: “It’s a fantastic goal and we saw it from a perfect angle up here and it was beautiful to look at.”
