Jamie Redknapp says things ‘couldn’t have gone worse’ for Man United.

Jamie Redknapp insists the loss of Casemiro because of their tough Premier League clash with leaders Arsenal has made the 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace that much worse.

The Brazilian midfielder secured his fifth booking of the season when he brought down Wilfried Zaha at Selhurst Park Palace in the 80th minute.

The £70m summer signing, which has been crucial to United’s success so far this campaign, will therefore now be forced to miss their trip to north London on Sunday.

Expert and former midfielder Redknapp sees the loss of Casemiro for Sunday’s clash as a major blow, even more so than the missed opportunity to move up to second place on Wednesday night.

Instead, they remain eight points behind current leaders Arsenal and third in the table.

“Things couldn’t have gone worse from a Man Utd perspective,” Redknapp told Sky Sports after the game.

“We talked about Casemiro before the game. Don’t let them book you. Don’t get involved in confrontations. It was so important because they need him on Sunday.

“When he was booked in the 80th minute, it was like Manchester United had had the steam completely drained.

It touched her so much. They knew their key player was missing from that defensive role.’

The former Real Madrid defensive midfielder appeared frustrated with team-mate Bruno Fernandes after being booked for his challenge against Zaha.

Redknapp added: “It was a moment of madness. You could see Casemiro was angry at Bruno Fernandes who jumped out of a (previous) challenge.

“That’s why he ends up on one-on-one with Zaha and gets booked. It could have been a red card. It’s a scandalous challenge. It’s ruthless.

“I could just see Mikel Arteta dancing around his living room because he is so important to Man Utd. You don’t have anyone on the team who can do what they do.

United boss Erik ten Hag also spoke about Casemiro’s suspension and still supports his side against the Gunners after beating them 3-1 at Old Trafford without their starman earlier in the season.

“I think it’s instinctive. He missed the ball. It’s clear that it was a dangerous situation. He wanted to stop it and that was his reaction.

“Last time we beat Arsenal without Casemiro, we have to do the same thing this time.”

Redknapp reiterated that Arsenal had benefited massively from Casemiro’s suspension and left United making some tough decisions before the clash to compete with the Gunners’ midfield trio of Granit Xhaka, Martin Odegaard and Thomas Partey.

“I said before the game if he would be booked and will miss that game. He’s so important.

‘You’ll have to get Fred or Scott McTominay involved. If you look at Arsenal at the moment with Odegaard, Xhaka and Partey, that midfield works so well.

“I can only really see it benefit Arsenal so enormously. They have so much confidence at the moment which makes them red-hot favourites, he’s such an important player, not in the Premier League.

“Certain teams work so well, and that’s exactly what he’s offering them. He senses danger and they will miss him so much for what he brings to the team. For Arsenal it’s exactly what they wanted to see today and it’s big news for them.

Former Tottenham and Liverpool man Redknapp also denied United were ever really in the title race after slipping at Selhurst Park, let alone still chasing.

“No, I will not do that. I didn’t really believe it before the game as I still think they have so much to do but the progress they’ve made has been amazing.

“The work he’s done, the culture at the club has changed and they look like a real force again.

“I’m sure they keep getting better. I think the title is a little too far away because of the bad start, but I think it’s important that they keep that momentum.

“You are full of confidence. There’s no reason why they can’t go to Arsenal and get a result, but it’s so much more difficult without Casemiro.
