Jamie Redknapp described Manchester City’s performance in the first half of the Carabao Cup quarter-finals as ‘diabolical’ after Southampton took a 2-0 lead.

Redknapp was stunned by Guardiola’s side’s performance in the first 45 minutes.

“I can’t imagine a worse 45 minutes under Pep Guardiola,” said Redknapp on Sky Sports.

“They were pathetic, second to every ball. From their point of view, there were so many mistakes.

“They were devilish in that first half.”

The pundit reserved praise for Southampton as the bottom side of the Premier League came into play as a clear outsider.

“Incredible, I wasn’t expecting that at all,” added Redknapp. “Southampton were great.

“Nathan Jones would have wanted his players to come after them and make it difficult for Man City. In his wildest dreams he never would have believed that this could happen.”

Chris Sutton, speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live, suggested Manchester City had been complacent heading into the quarter-finals.

“Southampton seem to be more aggressive and more focused in their game,” said Sutton.

“It’s almost like Manchester City showed up here tonight after beating them at Etihad Stadium and thought it was just going to happen.”

Things didn’t get any better for City after the break, even when Guardiola sent for Calvary, with Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne among those brought off the bench in the second half.

City didn’t have a shot on target throughout the game as Jones’ men stubbornly held on to set up a two-legged semi-final against Newcastle.
