48th-ranked American Jenson Brooksby stuns No. 2-seeded Casper Ruud in the second round of the Australian Open as he defeats the 2022 US Open finalist in a thrilling contest
USA’s Jenson Brooksby caused an upset in the second round of the Australian Open when he defeated second seed Casper Ruud.
The unseeded American defeated the Norwegian 6-3 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 to secure his spot in the next round.
The 22-year-old had a chance to topple the 2022 US Open and Roland Garros finalist in straight sets, but Ruud fought back to break Brooksby’s serve and eventually win the third set in a tiebreak.
Brooksby advanced to the third round for the first time in his career, where he will next meet fellow American Tommy Paul after beating world No. 32 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in five sets.
He continued the American attack Down Under after compatriot Mackenzie McDonald shocked No. 1 seed and defending champion Rafael Nadal on Tuesday.
