Odell Beckham appears to be on the verge of a move to the Dallas Cowboys, according to owner Jerry Jones.
It was rumored that Beckham was prone to missing the rest of the season to focus on signing for a free agency franchise, but now he could soon wear the star on his helmet.
Jones, who always shared positive cowboy news, squandered Odell’s chances of getting to Texas for this season’s Super Bowl round.
“Odell will be joining us,” Jones said Thursday via USA TODAY Sports. “There’s a good chance he will, with the full goal of getting ready for a playoff game or two, and then I’ll look to the future. But most of it is now.’
Dallas Cowboys owner and GM Jerry Jones could have plenty of reasons to smile if Beckham joins in
Beckham has repeatedly stated that he’s focused on securing something long-term as opposed to another rental role like his fleeting stint in Los Angeles.
While concerns about his health remain – given he hasn’t trained in front of teams – the former LSU receiver is said to be in tip-top shape.
“He’s been training,” Jones continued, “and of course he’s exceptional.”
It seemed like Dallas took a different direction, one away from Beckham, after adding veteran wideout TY Hilton to his receiver ranks on Monday.
The free agent wide receiver has been on something of an NFL recruiting journey for the past few weeks
While the former Colt may add depth, he hasn’t satisfied Jones’ craving for more star power in Big D. When Beckham arrives, the Cowboys GM foresees greatness in his immediate future.
“I’m confident we can get into some important games and get some Deion Sanders-type results,” Jones noted.
“Could it be possible to get such a great player into two or three playoff games and make some significant plays? I guess so. That’s not an exaggerated thought at all.’
TY Hilton’s signing was mistakenly viewed as an obstacle to Dallas’ acquisition of Beckham
“The greats, the exceptionals, have the ability to make a play or two that can make the difference in a World Cup or not,” Jones said.
“It’s kind of against the principles of all practices, repetition, that you do for football. It’s against. But the reality is, it happens. That was my motivation.”
Beckham had visits to Buffalo, his former team – the New York Giants – and Dallas this month.
Even after signing Hilton, Jones reiterated Dallas’ interest. Now it seems like it just paid off.
If Jones’ words come true, Dak Prescott will have another weapon to keep Dallas moving forward
