Jon Rahm admits he’s stunned to only be world No. 5 despite three wins in his last five starts

‘I’m trying to understand what’s going on…I feel like number 1 right now’: Jon Rahm admits he’s baffled by golf’s ranking system, having failed to qualify despite three wins in his last five starts Rising to number 5 in the world
- After his last win, Rahm renewed his criticism of golf’s ranking system
- Seventeen of the world’s top 20 players competed at the Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii
- The Spaniard is still fifth in the rankings despite three wins in his last five starts
Jon Rahm has renewed his criticism of golf’s ranking system after his third win in five starts failed to earn him a ranking.
The Spaniard made a stunning comeback from seven strokes behind Collin Morikawa to win Sunday’s Sentry Tournament of Champions in Hawaii.
However, he remains ranked No. 5 in the world due to the quirks of reforms introduced last year, which affect a field’s depth rather than its pound-for-pound strength.

Jon Rahm made a stunning comeback and won the Sentry Tournament of Champions
That meant the 38-seat Tournament of Champions received fewer points than a full-field tournament, despite featuring 17 of the world’s top 20.
Rahm butchered the changes as “ridiculous” before winning the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai and was critical again after his win in Hawaii.
He said: “Will I overtake Patrick Cantlay (world No. 4)? Because I’ve won three times since the (Fed Ex Cup) playoffs, and I can’t even get close to him. So I’m trying to understand what’s going on.’

The Spaniard has won three of his last five events and says he’s baffled he’s not world no
Rahm, who tied for second and fourth in addition to three out of five wins, added: “If they hadn’t changed the world ranking points, I would have been damn close now (to No. 1).
“But in my mind I feel like I’ve been the best player in the world since August. Clearly Scottie Scheffler was that player earlier in the year, then Rory (McIlroy, the current No. 1) was that player and I feel like it was me at the moment.
“Anybody can have a hot three, four months every year and get to this point. That’s the level of golf we’re at today. It is what it is. It’s very difficult to stay up there and it requires a lot of golf.”
