Jorge Masvidal insists Dana White’s plan to give Colby Covington next title shot can be scrapped

‘I’ll break Gilbert Burns’ face and Leon Edwards will call me out’: Jorge Masvidal insists Dana White’s plan to give hated rival Colby Covington another shot at the British title can still be scrapped if he at UFC 287 wins
Jorge Masvidal expects Leon Edwards to call him out if he beats Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 next month, despite Dana White’s plans to give Colby Covington a title shot.
Edwards was defending his welterweight belt on home soil against Kamaru Usman in their trilogy two weeks ago and was adamant that “Chaos” didn’t deserve the next shot at him.
“Gamebred”, who hates Covington very much, plans to usurp his old rival.
He told the MMA Hour: “I love Dana but Dana says a lot of things man. History says one thing: Whoever fights makes the most noise, who sells the most pay-per-views, and who fans want to see at the end of the day gets the title fight.
“Additionally, as far as I can remember, champions always call the shots and Colby is just a master at calling the police. That b***hp***yass motherf***er.’

Dana White has defended his decision to give Colby Covington a welterweight title fight

Leon Edwards could fight Colby Covington next but Jorge Masvidal has claimed he will be called out by the champion if he beats Gilbert Burns
‘Well, I’ll just keep going. I’m going to go out there and break Gilbert’s face, then Leon will call my name and I’m going to fight Leon for that belt and that’s it.
“Colby can just sit in his timeout box until they call out his ass to fight me again.”
Masvidal and Edwards’ rivalry dates back to 2019, when the American approached him backstage and seemingly punched him out of nowhere after abandoning an interview.
The pair were set to fight late last year but Masvidal eventually pulled out with a rib injury.
It will take a tremendous effort from Masvidal if he is to beat Burns and the pair have been in contrasting form.
The Brazilian beat Neil Magny in January while his opponent has lost his last three in April, two against Usman and the grudge match with Covington last March.
Masvidal then allegedly assaulted Covington outside a Miami Beach restaurant that same month before he was arrested and slapped with multiple charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief.
The case has yet to go to court and Masvidal recently told ESPN Deportes: I will not allow anyone to disrespect my family.

Edwards defeated Kamaru Usman in their trilogy and all eyes are on his next opponent

Masvidal must first fight Gilbert Burns, a fight he describes as a “stepping stone.”
“I can’t talk much because I’m charged with three felonies. I can only say that I am innocent.’
Dana White insisted after UFC London that Covington – who weighed in as a backup – would be given the next title shot.
“Yeah, that’s the fight that makes sense,” he said. “Colby Covington came here, cut his weight and was ready…he deserves the fight.”
At the post-fight press conference, Edwards said, “I don’t know how that makes sense. He hasn’t fought in over a year and a half. I don’t understand how he slips in for a world title shot.
“I’m the king now, I’ve earned my way. I feel like I should decide who’s next.’
