A desperate search is underway for ‘A Room With a View’ star Julian Sands – as he has been named as one of two missing hikers in an ‘extremely dangerous’ California mountain range.
Sands, 65, was reported missing by his family around 7.30pm on Friday after he went missing while hiking in the Mount Baldy area of California’s San Gabriel Mountains – where two hikers have died in recent weeks.
A separate search is underway for another hiker, California resident Bob Gregory, in the Crystal Lake area of the mountain range.
A spokesman for the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said, “Around 7:30 p.m. Friday, a hiker identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood was reported missing in the Baldy Bowl area of Mt. Baldy.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department says winter weather can create “hazardous conditions” on Mt. Baldy and is urging hikers to think twice before traversing the area
“Search and rescue teams responded and began searching. Due to the track conditions and the risk of avalanches, the ground crews were withdrawn from the mountain on Saturday evening.
“However, we continue to search with helicopters and drones, weather permitting. We will plan another ground search when the weather improves and it is safe for our ground crews.’
The sheriff’s department has warned that “storms have been difficult on the mountain” and air resources are limited, while her search and rescue team has been called out on 14 incidents in the past four weeks alone.
It urged hikers to think twice before attempting the trails in “extremely dangerous” conditions.
It comes as two people have died in recent days attempting to scale the same mountainous area – one of the most popular hiking trails in Los Angeles.
Crystal Paula Gonzalez, a mother of four dubbed “the dancing wandering queen,” reportedly slipped and fell 700 feet into the Baldy Bowl.
A helicopter was dispatched immediately and soon found Gonzalez “down a steep and icy hill surrounded by scores of willing hikers who helped in any way they could,” according to an incident report.
On December 28, Jarret Choi, 43, of LA, was hiking the Ice House Canyon Trail when he fell near the Ice House Saddle ridge line.
He was found two days later after a search was hampered by extreme weather conditions.
And on December 17, four people had to be rescued from the mountain by helicopter after freezing conditions made it impossible to move.

Sands is known for his roles in several films, including the 1985 feature film A Room with a View, Warlock, and Leaving Las Vegas.
Meanwhile, the Sheriff’s Department alert said, “Over the past four weeks, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue (SAR) teams have responded to 14 rescue missions on Mt. Baldy and the surrounding area.
“These rescue missions were for lost, stranded and/or injured hikers. Unfortunately in the last 4 weeks two hikers have not survived after falling and injuring themselves.
“Please note that the current conditions on Mt Baldy are adverse and extremely dangerous. Due to the strong winds, the snow has turned to ice, making hiking extremely dangerous.
“The sheriff’s search and rescue efforts are often hampered by inclement weather and dangerous avalanche conditions. The recent storms that have brought snow and ice conditions are not favorable for hikers, even those who think they have a high level of experience.’
Sands is best known for his roles in several films, including 1985’s A Room with a View, Warlock, and Leaving Las Vegas.
It’s unclear why Sands was in the area and whether he hiked alone or with another person.
Gonzalez, a mother of four from Covina, loved hiking, mountain biking and the outdoors
Treacherous conditions in the San Bernardino Mountains have meant search and rescue efforts have been “hampered by inclement weather,” along with the likelihood of “dangerous avalanche conditions.”
A father of three, Sands has been married twice.
From 1984 to 1987 his first marriage was to journalist Sarah Sands, who went on to edit publications including the Sunday Telegraph and London’s Evening Standard, as well as BBC Radio 4’s influential Today programme. The couple have one son, Henry.
The actor also has two daughters with journalist Evgenia Citkowitz, whom he married in 1990.
Meanwhile, a separate search is underway for another hiker, Bob Gregory of Hawthorne, in the Crystal Lake area of the mountain range.
Gregory’s family told the outlet that he was missing Monday and that they were “distraught” and “feared he may have injured himself and fallen.”
His relative added that police are in the process of locating his cellphone while search teams combed the area on the ground and from the air on Tuesday.
The Sheriff’s Department has asked visitors to follow simple tips to stay safe.
These include: “Observe all posted warning signs, check weather conditions (both current and forecast) for the area, make sure you have the right equipment, are training and properly prepared for alpine conditions (crampons, ice axes, proper… clothing), take a hiking buddy, bring a tracking or GPS device such as a SPOT device or an INREACH device, make sure all cell phones are fully charged, and bring a charged extra power pack for it.’
They’ve also told visitors to let someone know where and when they’re going, when they’ll be back, and “most importantly” not to go if they’re hesitating about the site.
