Kamala Harris swears in Democrat John Fetterman as Senator from Pennsylvania

Vice President Kamala Harris on Tuesday inaugurated the 6-foot-8-inch tall John Fetterman as the newest US Senator from Pennsylvania.

Fetterman, the former Keystone state lieutenant governor, was the only Democrat to flip a Senate seat during the 2022 midterm election, giving the party its 51st Senate seat.

Fetterman swapped his signature hoodie and athletic shorts for a suit as he walked alongside fellow Pennsylvania Democratic Senator Senator Bob Casey to take the oath of office in the Senate chamber fountain along with several other Senate peers.

Later, at a ceremonial swearing-in ceremony, the new senator was joined by his wife Gisele and the couple’s three children.

The former mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, slammed Trump-backed television personality Dr. Mehmet Oz in one of the most watched races of the 2022 cycle.

Just days before his Democratic primary in May, Fetterman suffered a stroke that left him with persistent auditory processing problems throughout his tenure in the Senate.

Fetterman had to be subtitled for the Oz debate in mid-October. Because of his shaky performance, many Democrats feared that Oz, who had outperformed Fetterman in the polls for most of the campaign, might jump ahead.

But on election night, Fetterman’s race was called before 1 a.m

After all the votes were tallied, Fetterman beat Oz by nearly five points.

Fetterman’s team successfully exploited Oz’s status as the television doctor was primarily based in New Jersey during the run of his television show.

The Fetterman campaign paid Snooki, a reality TV star from the Jersey Shore show, to say that Oz was welcome to return to New Jersey after his run, and paid for a plane to hoist a banner over Jersey Shore, which read: “Hey Dr. Oz. Welcome home to NJ! Dear John!’

When Oz traveled to Philadelphia to eat Philly cheesesteaks, Fetterman tweeted, “Ah yes, the trip to Pats + Geno’s – every tourist’s rite of passage.”

And Fetterman’s team made a big deal when Oz used the term “raw” while filming a grocery shopping video to blast President Joe Biden over rising food prices.

That joke was alive and well Tuesday when Fetterman officially became a member of Congress.

His new communications director, Joe Calvello, tweeted a picture of a vegetable tray with the caption, “Yes there are blanks at the Fetterman inauguration.”

“Allow me to introduce Pennsylvania’s junior (and very cute) Senator John Fetterman,” she wrote.

She also said that “of course” the couple’s two dogs were there in spirit as she posed in the Capitol holding up cardboard cutouts of pooches Levi and Artie.

She also shared with her Twitter followers that she’s retired her nickname “SLOP” — having previously served as Second Lady of Pennsylvania.
