Serena Williams won her match against world No. 2 Anett Kontaveit in front of a star-studded crowd at Flushing Meadows, but even more applause came from big names on social media.
The 40-year-old American, who unlocked a level of play from the vaults of history, knocked out the No. 2 seed Kontaveit and was roared at by everyone who packed the sport’s biggest arena.
Applause thundered in from every corner of the stadium, and also thundered in from corners of the internet as some of the world’s most famous names took the time to congratulate her.
Many also expressed their delight at seeing them play at least one more game as this could likely be their last tournament.
United States Vice President Kamala Harris was one of the most notable to congratulate Williams as she thanked the 40-year-old for her talent.
The Vice President tweeted: “Thank you Serena Williams for inspiring people around the world with your talent, grace and determination on and off the pitch. We celebrate all you were, all you are and all that is to come.’
Meanwhile, Lakers superstar LeBron James posted a video of Serena saying, “Goat Talk!!!” shortly after the game. Go on!!’

Golden State Warriors point guard and NBA Finals MVP Steph Curry joined the action, tweeting with a praying emoji, “Not done yet.”
The WNBA’s Chicago Sky even echoed this after his win in Game 2 of the WNBA Semifinals against the Connecticut Sun by tweeting, “We won. Sera won. Today was a good day.’

Speaking to the crowd after her match, Williams expressed her gratitude before even seeing the outpouring of support she saw online.
“I love this audience, it’s fantastic, there’s still a little bit of me left in me,” she said. “I love challenges and I rise to the challenge.
“The last two games really brought it together. After losing the second set I thought I had to do my best.
“I’m super competitive, I just see it as a bonus. I have absolutely nothing to lose. I’ve had an X on my back since 1999.”
The next person to chase the coveted X on Williams’ back will now be Australia’s Alja Tomljanovic when the two face off in the third round.
