League of Legends Rankings: All 2023 Changes

Riot Games has announced that 2023 will bring a number of changes to League of Legends leaderboards.

The next League of Legends ranked season is upon us. As players prepare for the New Year’s competition, Riot Games has announced that a number of changes are coming – some of which players will see in the PBE soon.

In a recent blog post, Product Lead Chris Roberts listed the updates players should be aware of.

League of Legends will have two ranked resets in the 2023 season. Split 1 begins early in the year in January and Split 2 begins mid-year, although an exact date has yet to be announced.

But with two ranked splits comes two ranked skins. These are mostly earned as before, although this time around ranked skins will be available for players of all tiers, not just gold and above. Players will continue to receive chromas based on their final rank at the end of the split.

Riot Games also plans to change the promotion series between tiers from Best of 5 to Best of 3 while removing the visible rank influence of games.

Speaking of the move, Roberts said: “At a high level, most players hit their leaderboard goals by mid-year, leaving them little to do. Some people continue to grind, but others drop out of ranked altogether or turn to smurfing, and this goes against some of our core goals for playing ranked league.

“At the end of the day, we want you to always have a goal to chase after and reward you for your accomplishments along the way.”

For next season, Riot Games will increase the number of split rewards available to players and place more earlier on the track. They will also reduce the number of games required to achieve each of the existing rewards.

Additionally, they plan to simplify the way split points are earned. Players receive more points for a win and slightly less for a loss.
