The result of the move meant Red Bull driver Max Verstappen was able to catch up with Hamilton and eventually overtake him to win the race.
Lewis Hamilton blew up his Mercedes team-mates after decisions saw him finish fourth
The seven-time champion would end up missing out on a podium finish as he finished fourth, with Russell even passing him to finish second.
The Silver Arrows driver told his team: “I can’t believe you screwed me like that, I can’t tell you how p****d I am.
“That was the worst shit.”
This outburst led to Villeneuve claiming in his column on Formule1.nl that the attitude shown by Hamilton was “not appropriate for a champion”.
Ex-Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve described Hamilton as “aggressive” because of his outburst.
He said: “I was amazed by Lewis Hamilton’s outburst in the race and especially the way it was done.
“He was aggressive, almost abusive. It’s good that he apologized, but that’s not a champion’s place.
“After everything the team has done for him, you shouldn’t be talking to them like that.”
Hamilton eventually apologized to his team and said he continued to have “100% faith” in the team.
Hamilton has yet to win a race this season and is currently sixth in the Drivers’ Championship
He said on Instagram: “I didn’t get it right last week and we didn’t get it right today (Sunday) but we win and lose as a team.
“We’ve been through worse. Everyone is doing their best and that’s all we can do.
“We will get up and win again. I have 100 percent confidence in this team and in our direction.”
The result meant Verstappen claimed his 10th win of the year, taking his points advantage in the Drivers’ Championship to 109, while Hamilton remains without a win and sixth overall this season.
