Love Island 2023: Fans notice a new catchphrase used by all islanders in the first episode

From “I’ve got a text” to “Pull me in for a chat,” the show is known for spawning a slew of famous slogans and catchphrases.

And Love Island fans were confident they’d already spotted a new one at Monday’s launch of the new winter series.

Viewers were irritated when they noticed the new islanders repeatedly used the word “unreal” to describe one another and took to Twitter asking for “new adjectives”.

While the long-running show has a long list of popular catchphrases that have become a hit with fans, the repeated use of “unreal” has already started to irk viewers.

The word was used primarily by many of the boys to describe the girls, with Farmer Will even saying to Tanya that she looked “unreal” during the mating ceremony.

But then he stopped when the boys were asked to step forward if they were attracted to her.

Fans took to social media to express their anger at the lack of variation in contestants’ vocabulary.

“All this crowd knows is ‘unreal’ can we use new adjectives,” asked a viewer on Twitter.

While others echoed this view by sharing, “If I hear ‘unreal’ AGAIN” and “Have you all been told to say ‘unreal’?”

The phrase left some confused, with a fourth user tweeting: “‘You look unreal’ I must be getting old. That just sounds like an insult to me.’

“I think more than ever this #loveisland feels like it’s a very specific subculture of artfully plucked youngsters who only speak in about five adjectives (unreal, insane, etc.) that they switch at random ‘ added another angry fan.

While many also called out Will for his outstanding compliment to Tanya before not stepping up for her.

The show’s winter series kicked off with a much-anticipated launch on Monday night that welcomed ten new singletons to the mansion – and a bombshell at the end.

And while they did what they do best on social media, fans got straight to work with a fresh batch of hilarious jokes and memes from the new contestants.

From Bauer Will’s awkward flirting to Olivia’s sidelong glance, every detail of the night’s proceedings seemed to evoke a comedic response.

When it was Olivia’s turn to choose a boy to mate with, she chose Kai even though he didn’t stand up for her.

She regretted the decision when Kai stepped up for Tanyel, prompting Olivia to hand him the daggers and frostily remark, “It is what it is”.

Viewers jumped in at the hilarious moment, with one declaring her side eye “the first meme of the season.”
