Police shoot dead 14 people and injure 28 in Madagascar when they open fire on a crowd protesting the kidnapping of an albino child

Police in Madagascar have shot dead at least 14 people and injured 28 others after opening fire on a crowd of protesters angry at the kidnapping of an albino child.

Angry villagers demanded the heads of the four suspects arrested in the kidnapping in the southeastern city of Ikongo last week.

When they tried to storm the police station, officers opened fire, beating dozens.

“The gendarmes … shot at the crowd,” local lawmaker Jean-Brunelle Razafintsiandraofa in the southeastern city of Ikongo told AFP.

Local doctor Tango Oscar Toky said “nine people died instantly” and another five later died in hospital.

People with albinism are considered by many in Madagascar to have mystical powers.

Due to superstition, their body parts can be sold for thousands of dollars and they are often the target of ritual killings.

Some believe that having sex with an albino woman can also cure AIDS.
