Manchester United and Leeds are expected to meet twice in the Premier League in just four days in February, bringing back memories of the infamous ‘trilogy’ of the 1991/92 season.

The two sides are expected to rearrange an earlier postponement for February 8 just four days before their clash at Elland Road – assuming neither side gets an FA Cup fourth round replay.

The clash was initially postponed following the sad death of Queen Elizabeth II in September, with the call due to take place two days before her funeral, with considerable police resources being diverted to London from across the UK.

It’s already expected to be a busy January and February for United who have 11 games scheduled with no prospect of a FA Cup replay and the question of rearranging the clash at Leeds.

The Red Devils will face opponents such as Crystal Palace, Leeds, Leicester City and Brentford in the top flight, while taking on Spanish giants Barcelona over two games in the Europa League.

Jesse Marsch’s side from Leeds are not quite as busy with seven games in the same span.

However, the possible reorganization got people thinking when the two sides faced off three months in the 18 days prior.

United and Leeds were pulled out of a hat in the 1991–92 FA Cup third round to ensure they would meet three times in the space of 18 days in all three domestic competitions.

The league game ended in a 1-1 draw before the Red Devils knocked their rivals out of the FA Cup with a fourth-minute goal from Mark Hughes in a 1-0 win.

It was more joy for Manchester United in their third encounter as they sealed a 3-1 win to send Leeds out of the League Cup.

The trilogy not only made for an exciting festive season, but also created such fierce rivalry for years to come.

The rivalry continues to this day – although Leeds were not in the top flight for many years, this historic event on the footballing calendar reinforced deep-rooted bitterness.
