  • Cristiano Ronaldo has been targeting a move from Man United this summer
  • Erik ten Hag is adamant Ronaldo will stay as the squad needs ‘qualified players’.

Erik ten Hag suggested Manchester United’s summer deal will end once Antony’s £85.5million signing is complete – Cristiano Ronaldo remains at the club.

Ronaldo has been looking for a move from Old Trafford in the hunt for Champions League football and communicated that desire in June.

The 37-year-old Portuguese did not start in either of United’s previous two games – against Liverpool and Southampton – and manager Ten Hag instead opted to start Marcus Rashford in the centre-forward position.

But it seems Ronaldo, who has been bought in all summer but has not been happy amid reported interest from Chelsea, Atletico Madrid and Napoli, will remain at Old Trafford.

‘[It is] sure, of course. I was just saying we need good players, you need more to cover all the games to maintain consistency, that’s what we’re striving for,” said Ten Hag, insisting Aaron Wan Bissaka will continue to play even after linking the The club will remain with moves for a new right-back.

Ajax winger Antony is expected to seal a move before the deadline and United are hoping he will be available for Sunday’s game at Arsenal.

They are set to secure a loan move for Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka but Ten Hag have no intentions of diving back into the market or making any further spending.

“We need to step up in the attacking departments, there are a lot of games to play, three games a week,” added Ten Hag.

“Above all, offensive players tire more quickly because they run more intensively. We need numbers. But not only quantity, we need quality.

“It will be the end for this window but when a great opportunity arises we always have to be vigilant at this top club.”

United have been buoyed by back-to-back victories over Liverpool and Southampton after two sobering defeats earlier in the season.

The Dutchman stressed that while he has seen an improvement, it is only a start and will need reinforcements in the coming weeks – starting in Leicester City on Thursday.

Ten Hag said: “I see it as a start, I think we have a good base, that’s the minimum we need to bring and I was happy to see the turnaround and we need to keep that to the spirit to keep that winning mentality because you need it if you want to have a successful season in this squad.”

Ten Hag added he hopes new signing Antony can play against Leicester at the weekend but Anthony Martial will not feature against Leicester on Thursday night.
