The Manchester United striker was reportedly ordered by club officials to tone down his speech following his harsh criticism of superstar Ronaldo.

Greenwood, 21, is not currently playing or training for United as the club conducts an internal investigation after prosecutors announced in February that the case against him would be dropped.

In January 2022, he was charged with attempted rape, assault with actual assault, and controlling and coercive behavior. But the CPS last month confirmed the withdrawal of key witnesses, and new material that has come to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of a conviction.

The Portuguese later became a Greenwood team-mate at Old Trafford (pictured).

A source said: “He knew he was a good player and cut, he wasn’t shy about telling someone he sucked. When you hear that, you think: “You can’t talk like that”.

He also called future United team-mate Ronaldo, then at Real Madrid, “dead” – slang meaning “done” – in reference to his perceived decline, with staff forced to step in and “rectify” him as part of a strategy to guide him to be less immature.

Greenwood was also reportedly threatening a move to Red Devils bitter rivals Man City amid tensions in training.

After the charges against him were dropped, the Bradford-born player said: “I’m relieved that this matter is now over. I want to thank my family, loved ones and friends for their support.’

United responded with a statement: “Manchester United takes note of the prosecutor’s decision to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood.

“The club will now conduct its own process before determining the next steps. We will not comment further until this process is complete.’

Greenwood, crowned once by England in 2020, is still at Old Trafford until the summer of 2025 but it’s unclear when or if he will ever play for United again, or ever play professional football again.

However, according to another source, he would “run through a brick wall” to play for the Red Devils again.
