Manchester United defender Luke Shaw could reportedly miss the rest of the season as his recovery from surgery is ‘taking longer than expected’.

The England international underwent surgery last week to have metal bolts removed from his leg, which were originally put in after he broke his leg in a Champions League clash in 2015.

Interim chief Ralf Rangnick was hoping to have Shaw back in a matter of weeks, but the operation is taking longer to recover than originally expected, according to the Telegraph.

It is said the 26-year-old could miss the rest of the season, which could hurt United’s ever-dwindling hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

Shaw first became uncomfortable with his leg during the international break while away with England.

In Manchester United’s recent 1-1 draw with Leicester, the left-back attracted attention towards the end of the half but continued until half-time when he was substituted.

Caretaker manager Ralf Rangnick said last week: “We had to undress him at half-time and he has problems with his leg, where he had surgery in 2015.

“The doctor has told me that they have decided to remove the metal bolts in his leg – they need to be removed – and that is happening and he will be out for the next two or three weeks.”

While Rangnick was hoping to have Shaw back soon, the new reports suggest they are in a race against time to even have him fit for the remainder of the season.

Points lost in the draw with Leicester and the 1-0 defeat at Everton put United seventh in the table – six points ahead of Tottenham, who are bottom of the Champions League.

They have seven games left to salvage their season.

Shaw suffered a double broken leg in September 2015 after a poor tackle from then-PSV defender Hector Moreno.

In total, he missed 11 months of action and only became a regular at United in the 2018/19 season.

“I was really close to losing my leg,” Shaw said in 2018.

“I didn’t know that until six months later when the doctor told me. At that time they thought of flying me back [from Holland].

‘If I had flown back [to Manchester], I probably would have lost my leg because of the blood clots in the leg. I have two scars on the side of my leg where they had to cut it open and pull out the clots.’

Shaw has also struggled through injury this season, often forcing Rangnick to call in Brazil substitute Alex Telles.
