Man United target Orkun Kokcu ‘expected to join Benfica for £26m’

Man United target Orkun Kokcu ‘is ready to join Benfica for £26m’ after Dutch icon Wesley Sneijder urged him NOT to join Erik ten Hag’s side

  • Orkun Kokcu has reportedly attracted interest from several Premier League sides
  • The Turkey international scored eight goals in midfield for Feyenoord last season
  • Wesley Sneijder urged the player to stay at Feyenoord amid United interest

Feyenoord captain Orkun Kokcu is reportedly set to join Portuguese giants Benfica, ending all Manchester United transfer interest.

The Turkey midfielder played a key role in Feyenoord’s impressive season, during which manager Arne Slot was closely linked to the Tottenham leadership position.

Aged just 22, he proved crucial in midfield as the Rotterdam side secured the memorable Dutch league title.

However, his father has reportedly attracted interest from several clubs with a view to a summer move reports suggested Manchester United sent scouts to watch him face off against Ajax in a cup tie earlier this season.

However, it now seems like Erik ten Hag will miss one of his reported transfer targets this summer as Benfica appear to have preempted him.

Dutch outlet De Telegraaf claim the Turkey international is close to a move and the clubs have agreed a transfer fee of £25.7m (€30m) plus a further £8.6m (€10m) in extras.

He is understood to be seen as a long-term replacement for Enzo Fernandez after the world champions joined Chelsea in a record British £107million move in January.

Although United were reportedly interested in Kokcu, he was apparently cautioned against a move by Dutch legend Sneijder, who claimed he should stay at the club given the Red Devils’ interest.

“He did a great job. “He played a fantastic season,” said Sneijder in May. “But I doubt he can compete at the top of Europe.” Where is a boy like that supposed to go?

“I would say stay another year.” Enjoy it. If you’re really good, that option will come naturally. Maybe he can reach the top of European football. If he’s a regular for three or four years and leads the team, then that’s possible.

“If you go to a mid-tier team and you go for the money, there’s a chance you’ll never play in the Champions League. I would say stay with Feyenoord.’

Kokcu was seen as an ideal reinforcement for United in midfield; An energetic and aggressive midfielder, he scored eight goals and three assists in the Dutch top flight in the 2022/23 season.

With interest from Premier League sides running high, Benfica are reportedly looking to include a £102million release clause in his contract.

United in particular will prioritize the search for a new midfielder this summer to bolster their midfield options.

Marcel Sabitzer is expected to return to Bayern Munich once his loan expires, while Scott McTominay has been linked with a move to Newcastle and Fred is reportedly set to be sold from Fulham with interest this summer.

The Red Devils are also in the running for West Ham’s Declan Rice as the player played his last Hammers game by winning the Europa Conference League final on Wednesday.

However, Ten Hag and Co. have to prevail against the interest of players like Arsenal and Bayern Munich, who are among the top candidates for the England international.
