Manchester City 6-0 Nottingham Forest: Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick in the first half to take his tally to nine goals in five Premier League games before Joao Cancelo netted the striker and Julian Alvarez bagged a brace to clinch the defeat to seal
- Erling Haaland scored his second consecutive hat-trick in league games
- The Norwegian striker completed his treble in just 38 minutes of the first half
- Joao Cancelo slammed home the fourth goal from the edge of the box
- Julian Alvarez ended Wednesday night’s defeat with a late brace
Five games into the season and Erling Haaland is well over a third of the way to winning the Golden Boot. No seriously. Go and check the calendar. And then check out the previous winners.
Twenty-three has been the magic number in each of the last three campaigns. Twenty-two the one before. Haaland already has nine himself. Keep doing this and he would erase all records.
One left the door early on Wednesday evening. Never has a player scored so many goals in their first five Premier League games. Haaland beat Mick Quinn’s eight and a man named Sergio Aguero as he looted his hat-trick seven minutes from half-time.

At that point it was six goals in his last hour of football, having left that stadium to a standing ovation with a treble on Saturday as well. It took Aguero a few years to get some match points here. How many more could follow for his successor? Many, you would imagine.
Nottingham Forest was beaten long before. Haaland needed three touches to finish this as a contest – his first to score the opener and the next two, both involved in the construction of the second. Three touches and that was it, midway through the first half. Thank you for coming.
And by the break he had topped 15 teams in the division. These are days City fans, who Pep Guardiola has heavily praised for turning up the volume in recent weeks, must appreciate. They usually have to wait patiently for their signings to learn Guardiola’s path to see them form into superstars over a period of time. This guy just emerged as someone who thinks he’s the best in the world.
Haaland intervened to turn a Phil Foden cross past the post past Dean Henderson for the first goal
Although he went on to score his first two league goals for the club, poor Julian Alvarez – smart and tenacious in the No 10 role – became something of a footnote.
It’s all about the other at the moment and what the rest of the league is doing with him is unclear. Haaland showed that he is too fast, too tall and too fast on his feet for defenders. And better defenders than those set up for Forest will find that out in the coming months.
In terms of signings, this is transformational for Guardiola and – amazingly, just a month into his City career and a month since some have toyed with writing him off after the Community Shield – it seems difficult for the manager to finding new ways to describe how good he is #9.
Haaland scored the second goal after a poor clearance from goalkeeper Dean Henderson
What he’s doing is taking the risk out of those home games against smart opponents. Forest weren’t bad, they occasionally grabbed the ball and turned it around menacingly, but they were punished in a way that not everyone here has experienced in recent years. Crystal Palace encountered the exact same problem over the weekend.
Anyway, the goals. In the 12th minute, Phil Foden set deep after a corner. He looked up and saw that Haaland had made two different runs. Her telepathy is such that the timing was perfect and, although Foden’s flank was easily deflected by Morgan Gibbs-White, was always about to find his man. Joe Worrall couldn’t do anything against Haaland’s dart and the Norwegian stabbed past Dean Henderson.
Henderson won’t be too fond of the second goal’s highlights, his feeble pass in the 23rd minute only finding Bernardo Silva and seconds later ending up in the Manchester United loanee’s net. Haaland got in Foden’s way and Neco Williams’ last duel could only distract the striker. empty mesh.
The Norwegian completed his hat-trick in the 38th minute with a close-range header
John Stones had seen a header disallowed for offside moments before Haaland had his third – in which Foden’s involvement was again crucial. Foden found Stones and the defender nodded it back where it came from, Haaland hung in the six-yard box, nestled between men who might as well have been in different zip codes, finishing the job with his forehead.
Forest’s first shot on goal, a Gibbs-White try, was enthusiastically celebrated by all four sides just before the hour mark and City had scored another goal by then. Joao Cancelo collected a pass on the edge of Henderson’s box and rolled it up to his top right corner.
Alvarez had his brace and slammed under Henderson with 25 minutes to go and the other hammered past the keeper at 87 in a way Agüero would have been proud of.
Haaland had left the stage to a high five and a slap on the butt from his manager and was sitting among the substitutes grinning with Foden pinching his ear as he laughed. No one else who’s keen on winning anything this year is going to smile about it.
