Manchester City are making a late rush to sign Manuel Akanji from Borussia Dortmund for £17.5m as Pep Guardiola looks to stock up on FIVE central defenders this season

  • Manchester City are hoping to strengthen their four centre-backs at the club
  • However, injuries have plagued Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake this season
  • City are in positive talks with Borussia Dortmund over a transfer of the defender
  • The 27-year-old is in his last year of contract at Signal Iduna Park

Manchester City are close to landing Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji to complete a potential fifth summer signing.

The centre-back has emerged as a target for the Premier League champions and her late move comes after he was linked with Arsenal earlier in the transfer window.

The clubs are in talks over a £17.5million move for the 27-year-old, who is in the final year of his contract at Signal Iduna Park, and talks between the clubs are progressing well.

Pep Guardiola refused to rule out City making any more signatures in the window on Tuesday when asked if City were still ready to do business, replying with: “I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Although City appear well-stocked with centre-backs in Ruben Dias, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte and Nathan Ake, the latter two have been dogged by injury concerns.

With that in mind, it goes without saying that none of the four will be sold to make room for the arrival of the 41-cap Switzerland international.

After making his international debut in 2017, Akanji joined Dortmund from Basel a year later and was a regular for the first team 36 times last season.

However, he has since lost his place in the team due to summer arrivals at Dortmund, including Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule and Freiburg’s Nico Schlotterbeck, and is yet to feature this season.

City have already spent £110m on three players including new star striker Erling Haaland, England defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips and Anderlecht left-back Sergio Gomez.

Akanji would also join backup goalkeeper Stefan Ortega, who came on a free transfer, while Julio Alvarez is also part of the City squad during this tenure, having signed earlier this year and spent the first half of 2022 on loan at former club River Plate.
