The 20-year-old’s deal was understood to have been held up as Velez wanted tax paid on his fee too, with the deal now costing around £8.2million, above his buy-out clause.

Perrone is expected to sign for City following his participation in the South American U20 Championship with Argentina.

Perrone has been on the radar of Premier League sides Wolves and Newcastle, as well as Portuguese side Benfica, but City will win the race for the youngster.

Based in the Liniers neighborhood on the outskirts of Buenos Aires, Velez Sarsfield plays in Argentina’s Primera Division.

Velez President Sergio Rapisarda has confirmed talks are ongoing and admitted Perrone is determined to leave the company.

“The boy, he wants to go,” Rapisarda said, according to Garre. “The city coach called him three times, [Javier] Mascherano also persuaded him, which I don’t like.

“The boy loves the coach of this club. We’ll take the risk. We’re trying to be the best in transfers and with numbers that favor Velez.

Meanwhile, City have started talks over a new deal for Ilkay Gundogan, who has an offer to join Barcelona in the summer.

Gundogan was Guardiola’s first signing as City manager, joining the club from Borussia Dortmund in 2016 for £20million – and has scored 51 goals in 278 games for the side.

He has won four Premier League titles as well as four League Cups and one FA Cup in his six years at Manchester.

The playmaker is hoping to add more silverware this season before either leaving or staying at the club at the end of the season.
