  • Manchester United are considering a move for the Burnley striker Wout Weghorst
  • The club have held talks with the Dutch international who is on loan at Besiktas
  • United have been exploring multiple loan options due to limited finances
  • Weghorst has scored ten goals in 20 games for club and country this season

Manchester United have held talks about signing Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley.

The Netherlands international, who scored twice against Argentina at last month’s World Cup, including one from a clever free-kick, is currently on loan at Besiktas in Turkey for the season but could call it a day after he came up as an option for United boss Erik Ten Witch.

United reviewed a number of loan options this month as January finances are limited. However, they struggle to find the right destination, with the most popular options only available with permanent transfers.

Weghorst has scored ten goals in 20 games for club and country this season, including one against Kasimpasa on Saturday, and waved to fans as if saying goodbye after his goal.

The 6ft 6in forward signed for Burnley from Wolfsburg for £12million last January and not long after impressed in a 1-1 draw with United, equalizing for Jay Rodriguez. However, as the season progressed he struggled to make a bigger impact, scoring just two goals and Burnley was subsequently relegated.

Weghorst might not be what fans expect from a new striker, but he would certainly bring a different attacking dimension to United than they already have.

He was unhappy with his level in the Premier League last season and is keen to try again – especially if talks with United progress.

Before joining Turf Moor, he had an impressive goal average of almost one in two games. He played 144 games for Wolfsburg and scored 77 goals.

United will have to be resourceful in this window as their owners look to sell the club.

The Glazers’ stance on funding meant they were unable to bid for Cody Gakpo, who instead joined Liverpool from PSV Eindhoven. They want another striker option after terminating Cristiano Ronaldo’s contract last month.
