Marco van Basten sends bizarre warning to Erik ten Hag over Wout Weghorst pursuit

Marco van Basten said Manchester United must be careful about signing too many “Dutchmen” and expressed his concern about Wout Weghorst.

United are keen to loan Weghorst out until the end of the season after seeing him play Argentina the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

However, Van Basten is not convinced Weghorst is right for United as he claims there are other players who “offer more than centre-forward”.

Van Basten has also expressed his concerns about the nationality of Manchester United’s main target.

The former Netherlands international says Erik ten Hag must be careful about signing too many Dutch players and cited Barcelona as a case study.

He said Ziggo Sport: “It can be dangerous if you have too many Dutch and things don’t go well.

“You saw that at Barcelona too, when they had five Dutchmen. Then it will work against you. Ten Hag has to be careful with that.”

Van Basten has also expressed his concerns about United’s signing of Wout Weghorst (above).

Van Basten went on to talk about how he had “doubts” about Weghorst – who has them? scored nine goals in 18 appearances for Besiktas this season while on loan.

Van Basten compared Weghorst to PSV Eindhoven’s Luuk de Jong and said the latter should take precedence.

“I have my doubts,” van Baten told Ziggo Sport. “Look at Luuk de Jong. This is really a striker to play through the air.

“I don’t think Weghorst is very strong in that regard. He can get a header, but he’s more of a kid who can make a difference with his enthusiasm and power.”

Van Basten isn’t the only one questioning Weghorst’s compatibility with Manchester. Dutch legend Wesley Sneijder has also voiced his concerns.

He said: “I think they saw the free-kick trick [in the quarter-final of the World Cup against Argentina]so they don’t fall for it in England anymore.

“In terms of a striker, is he really someone United are waiting for? I do not think so. They have 300 of them left in the Premier League. It must be a stunt. It really can’t be true.’
