Marcus Rashford equals Wayne Rooney’s 11-Year Manchester United goalscoring record

Marcus Rashford equals Wayne Rooney’s Manchester United 11-YEAR record after scoring a SIXTH straight Premier League game at Old Trafford – as the in-form striker helps launch the comeback in the Leeds draw

  • Marcus Rashford has been in superb form since his return from the World Cup
  • The forward has now scored seven goals in his last eight Premier League games
  • The Manchester United striker’s goal against Leeds was his 20th of the season

Marcus Rashford’s impressive season reached another milestone on Wednesday night as the Manchester United striker equaled an 11-year club record from Wayne Rooney.

Rashford struck in United’s 2-2 draw with Leeds and continued his scoring streak with his sixth straight Premier League goal at Old Trafford.

Rooney was the previous player to achieve this feat, scoring in an incredible 4-4 draw against Everton in April 2012.

That afternoon proved to be unforgettable for the Red Devils, however, as they conceded two late goals that would eventually prove crucial after being guided to the Premier League title by rivals Manchester City on goal difference.

United’s own title fight was hit hard against Leeds on Wednesday after they also managed to concede just a point, but Rashford’s goal started a comeback, with Erik ten Hag’s side coming along after a Wilfried Gnonto strike in the first minute and an own goal shortly afterwards 0-2 was halftime by Raphael Varane.

Rashford rose highest to meet a cross from Diogo Dalot to head home just after the hour before Jadon Sancho leveled with 20 minutes remaining.

The goal also marked Rashford’s 20th season in all competitions – including 11 of 22 games in the top flight

The 25-year-old started in six games against West Ham in October and has since scored against Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, Manchester City and also Crystal Palace.

Rasfhord has not only impressed at home. He has scored in all but one of United’s eight Premier League games since returning to the domestic tournament after the World Cup in December.

Meanwhile, United boss Erik ten Hag has praised Sancho for scoring the equalizer against Leeds, capping the return to form for the striker, who has spent much of the winter restoring his mental and physical fitness, after being out since October.

Ten Hag said, “He’s in the back,” Ten Hag said. “I’m proud that he made it. I support him, the coaches support him, the team support him, but he has to do it alone.

‘It’s in his own hands. If he wants, he can do it. I really enjoy seeing him play the way he did with so much confidence and conviction.

“We know he’s a great player. I think he can always have a big impact, but he has to work hard. It will motivate him to get more. I really enjoyed it, especially for him – it will strengthen him.”

United’s draw comes at a potential transition period for the club as owners, the Glazer family, look to sell – drawing the attention of Qatari investors who are talking about a potential £4.5bn buyout have recorded.
