A man was shot dead by police after allegedly attacking officers with a knife.

Police were called to a house on Love Street in Mareeba, far north Queensland, around 11.30am on Saturday.

They had received reports that a man had threatened to harm himself.

Police said negotiators spoke to the man who allegedly had a woman with him and refused to let her go.

The man is said to have approached special officers armed with a knife.

The police then shot the man.

Immediate first aid and CPR were administered, but the man died at the scene.

There were tense scenes in the street as angry crowds gathered to question police about the shooting.

When police investigated the incident, a crime scene was declared.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated by the Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner.

The investigations are overseen by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
