Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson described Mary Fowler as “stunning” after her impressive performance as a substitute in Thursday night’s 2-0 win over Iran.

In an Olympic qualifier that the Matildas would win handily despite an overload of stars, Australia had just a slim 1-0 lead when Gustavsson decided to bring in reinforcements in the 65th minute.

Superstar Sam Kerr, Fowler and Steph Catley were all introduced – to great effect.

Although it was Kerr who scored the winner for the Matildas in the 78th minute, Fowler was the standout player.

Their deft touches, pinpoint passes and penetrating runs caused all sorts of headaches for the Iranian defense.

And Fowler’s one-two with Catley, setting up Kerr’s goal, was magical.

After the game, Gustavsson revealed that the role he gave Fowler that night was inspired by the way Manchester City had used the 20-year-old.

“They used Mary Fowler as a winger this season and she was outstanding in the league,” Gustavsson said.

“We said, ‘Let’s try them out in our environment’ and Mary’s performance in those minutes on the left was just stunning.”

“I think she was our best, which means we now have another tool in the wide areas that is perfect for us.”

Fowler enjoyed a breakthrough World Cup season and it seems the sky is the limit for the speedy striker.

But Gustavsson tried to take the pressure off Fowler.

“She shouldn’t be the one who has to carry this team or take responsibility in that sense,” Gustavsson said.

“She should be that young player who is the spark and can just do her thing. “Some of the experienced players can handle the pressure.”

The Matildas will be back in action against the Philippines at Optus Stadium on Sunday and Gustavsson is expected to field a much stronger starting XI.
