Matildas star Sam Kerr shares intimate photos from engagement to Kristie Mewis as the couple are confirmed to wed after months of speculation

Matildas star Sam Kerr has shared intimate photos of the moment she proposed to her long-term girlfriend Kristie Mewis.

In photos shared on Instagram on Tuesday, the superstar striker appeared with her knee bent and asked for the hand of American soccer player Mewis.

In the photos, Mewis appeared surprised as she beamed at Kerr, who was holding open a ring box.

The happy couple were delighted as Sam raised her arm in joy, while Mewis cuddled up close to her in another photo.

A close-up of the massive diamond on Mewis’ hand proved that Kerr clearly spared no expense for the occasion.

In the photos, Sam was seen wearing a blue button-down shirt and black shorts. She completed her ensemble with white sneakers.

Mewis wore a blue crop top and bike shorts on the special day and completed her outfit with a pair of white sneakers.

The couple was showered with congratulations from their followers, including other sports stars.

“Congratulations,” wrote Australian cricketer David Warner.

It comes just weeks after Mewis confirmed to People magazine that the couple was engaged following months of speculation.

The Matildas striker included the shot in an Instagram post, accompanied by the simple caption “September people x”, along with two other images showing a bejeweled ring on her friend Mewis’ left ring finger.

Pictures taken on Kerr’s birthday in September also appeared to show Mewis hiding her ring finger.

The couple had celebrated Kerr’s 30th birthday with a photo of their dinner, which showed the Australian with her hand wrapped around Mewis’ waist – and the American football star’s left hand carefully positioned to avoid a ring see.

“Happy birthday my love,” she captioned the post.

When Mewis appeared in a promotional clip for the video game EA FC 24 in mid-September, fans also got a quick look at the ring on Mewis’ hand.

As speculation reached its peak, Mewis’ left hand appeared to be intentionally obscured in recent photos of the couple.

Fans called the photo of Kerr with the gold ring a “soft start to the engagement,” with one writing, “Ahahah the ring, congratulations Sam,” and another asking, “So where’s the proposal video?”

Mewis shared a post on her Instagram Story earlier that month in which she appeared to be holding Kerr’s hand.

Once again, most of the fingers on Mewis’ left hand were not visible in the photo – leading some to believe she may have been hiding a ring.

The couple met when they were both playing for rival clubs in the US league in 2019.

During the 2020 Covid lockdown, they chatted online for almost four months before spending two weeks in quarantine together, where they quickly fell in love.

Their on-field embrace made headlines as Kerr’s split from her former long-term partner – another US club player, Nikki Stanton – had not yet become public.
