Rugby league player Matty Johns has revealed he ‘took out’ the conclusion of the Sea Eagles’ wild ‘Mad Monday’ celebrations after the team mugged him at his own home.
Speaking on SEN radio, Johns told colleague Matt White he was woken up at 4am on Tuesday after hearing a commotion in the garage at his home on Sydney’s North Beaches.
The Premiership winners with Newcastle Knights went to investigate and found half of Anthony Siebold’s squad – including his youngest son Cooper – were losing their nerve.
“I’m a little tired this morning,” Johns began. “I caught myself having a mourning beer with my old mate at 4am, [Manly assistant coach] Jimmy Dymock.
“The players were present at their presentation evening [at the Manly Pacific] and decided to continue in my garage.

The impromptu celebration followed Manly’s end-of-season presentation night, where skipper Daly Cherry-Evans accepted the Roy Bull ‘Best and Fairest’ award
“I only had one [beer]that was enough.’
Johns confirmed there were “a few phone calls” asking about turning the music down as the sun came up.
He also joked that he was disappointed that the Melbourne Storm or Brisbane Broncos weren’t partying in his garage – and said he’d have to settle for the Sea Eagles, who “didn’t even make the top eight.”
It was a far cry from the Bulldogs’ “Mad Monday” celebrations, which saw the team taken to the charity Rev Bill Crews Foundation so they could help feed some of Sydney’s poorest people.
After retiring from the NRL in 2002 due to sustained shoulder and neck injuries, Johns made a successful transition into the media.
After stints on Channel Nine and Seven, Johns joined Fox Sports in 2012, where he now hosts a series of shows throughout the football season and a weekly podcast with NRL legend Cooper Cronk.
The former five-eighth also had a dramatic falling out with his brother – NRL Immortal Andrew Johns – ahead of the 2023 Origin series, with the feud remaining unresolved.
The big argument broke out between live broadcasts on SEN when Matty praised Queensland manager Billy Slater.
Andrew Johns is a diehard Blues who is closely associated with the team’s coach, Brad Fittler.

He exploded over his older brother’s public praise for the Maroons boss, leading to an explosive argument.
While Andrew continues to ignore his brother, “Joey” keeps in touch with Matty’s sons, Jack and Cooper.
“I’m talking to him,” Knights backer Jack Johns said on a recent podcast. “Me and he are pretty close.”
Matty replied, “So you switch to the other side, huh, Judas?”
“Well why don’t you all just join in and kick me like your bloody uncle did, okay?”
“Do you think Joey will call me and bury the hatchet? Or do you think he’ll carry that grudge on forever? Because I hope he carries it on forever.’
