New York Red Bulls midfielder Dru Yearwood has been sent off after brutally kicking a girl in the face with a ball.

After getting frustrated at giving away a foul, Yearwood angrily smashed the ball into the stands, hitting a fan seated in the third row. The incident caused another child, who may also have been hit, to burst into tears in the front row.

Yearwood immediately realized his mistake and rushed into the crowd to apologize only to be shunned by a fan near the girl who was hit by distraught Red Bulls fans who showed their disgust towards the player.

“A**hole” chants were blared around the stadium.

In the 94th minute of added time after the incident, he was sent off and received a second yellow card from the referee.

The Red Bulls and Yearwood both released statements apologizing to the fan and sending them well wishes.

The Major League Soccer team’s statement read: “The safety of everyone attending our events at the Red Bull Arena is of the utmost importance to our organization.

Yearwood’s statement read: “I want to apologize from the bottom of my heart to the fans who were hit by the ball I kicked at Saturday’s game.

“I was overwhelmed with emotions that day and let down the entire organization and every single New York Red Bulls fan.

“I hope the fans are okay and can forgive me.”

The Philadelphia Union won the game 2-0 in a fight that was decided long before Yearwood was sent off.

Yearwood will at least miss the Red Bulls’ next game against the New England Revolution.

After the defeat, the Red Bulls are third in the MLS Eastern Conference with 47 points.

Philadelphia, on the other hand, is well in first place with 60 points after the win.
